Jose Mourinho has been dismissed by Fenerbahce following the club's failure to secure Champions League qualification.
The news comes just days after Ruben Amorim, the current Manchester United boss, led his team to a shock defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby in the Carabao Cup. Amorim remains in charge of the Red Devils, but the pressure is growing on him.
Fenerbahce suffered a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in the Champions League playoffs and will now compete in the Europa League this campaign. The Turkish team managed a goalless draw in the first leg at home in Istanbul but succumbed to a 1-0 reverse in Portugal on Wednesday, consigning it to Europe's secondary tournament.
Mourinho joined Fenerbahce in June 2024; he leaves after securing victory in 37 of his 62 matches at the helm.
The 62-year-old steered his team to the runner-up spot in the Turkish Super Lig last term, though it could only manage a last-16 finish in the Europa League and suffered quarterfinal elimination from the Turkish Cup.
Fenerbahce said in a statement: "Our Professional Football First Team's technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us.
"We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career. Fenerbahce Sports Club."
Fenerbahce has taken action merely two fixtures into the domestic campaign, with the club sitting seventh following one victory and one stalemate. His tenure in Istanbul proved characteristically contentious, with the Portuguese tactician frequently generating newspaper coverage through his conduct.
Mourinho, who had penned a two-year deal with Fenerbahce last summer, follows fellow former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in departing his role after the Norwegian was dismissed by Besiktas on Thursday.
He was recently touted for a switch to Nottingham Forest amid the breakdown between boss Nuno Espirito Santo and owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Speaking after the 1-0 loss to Benfica, which ultimately sealed his fate, Mourinho remarked: "It is a club that knows this type of game, and obviously, there is sadness in not being able to do it, but for me, I am aware that we lost against a team that is better than us.
"We had chances, but then we were reduced to 10 men and the game was over. But I think overall, the better team went through."
Amorim faced the music after his team's loss at Grimsby. He said: "I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change.
"I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.
"The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."
