Liverpool should raid either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in order to find an heir to the “irreplaceable” Mohamed Salah this summer.

That’s according to former Reds defender Dominic Matteo, who feels there is no one currently at Salah’s level in the Premier League who would be able to step into the Egyptian’s shoes at Anfield.

Salah will of course be leaving Liverpool this summer, having reached an agreement with the club last month as he prepares to bring the curtain down on nine years on Merseyside, in which he has secured his legacy as one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Although Salah’s returns this season have dropped dramatically compared to the rest of his spell at Anfield, his departure does present a conundrum for Arne Slot and the club as they look at the best way to replace him.

Former Liverpool star Matteo has warned that it may be an impossible task, although two big names did spring to mind.

“Salah is irreplaceable with the numbers he's got and what he's achieved,” Matteo told Liverpool.com via BetSelect.co.uk. “But they'll have to find someone.

“Looking at players in the Premier League now, there's no one who's been as good as Salah. Maybe someone who's younger might get to that level.

“When I look at clubs like Arsenal, you've got people like [Bukayo] Saka. I'm not saying Liverpool are going to get Saka, but they need someone like that who can play in that wide area and bring goals.

“There are so many players at Paris Saint-Germain that I'd like to get. Can we go and get [Ousmane] Dembele? That'd be all right!”

Salah has just six games remaining now before he waves goodbye to Anfield, with the winger and left-back Andy Robertson both set to depart at the end of the current season.

It marks the end of an era for Liverpool, and Matteo is in no doubt about their standing in the club’s history.

“When I hear Mo Salah's this, his legs are going, all that, it’s so hard to say that about someone who's been so good and so consistent for so many years,” Matteo said.

“He's been the difference in Liverpool winning stuff at the highest level. Some of the days when I first watched him live, I couldn't believe it. He was incredible to watch firsthand, and I actually say it was a privilege to watch him at his best because he was so good.

“He hasn't got his numbers this year, goals-wise, but he's still scored more than most. It's probably like a normal season for most clubs that do well.

“But for him, because his standards are so high, he'll feel disappointed, but he shouldn't because he's been incredible. He's got to be in the top 10 Liverpool players of all time. There are a lot of people to look at there, but what he's done and what he's achieved in those years is incredible.

“He deserves that send-off that some of the greats have had, because he is a great, I don't care what anyone says. I’m sure they’ll do the right thing with both Mo and Andy when they leave, because it will be emotional. When I had my health issues, it was Liverpool that came to me with help. That’s the way the club has always looked after things. I’d put both Robbo and Salah as legends.”
