Liverpool’s preseason clash with AC Milan ended in a 4–2 defeat, but all eyes remained on new signing Florian Wirtz.
Arne Slot and his squad have been training in Asia throughout the week as preparations intensify for their Premier League title defense. They've also welcomed another new addition, with striker Hugo Ekitike joining up with the team, although the Milan game came too soon for the striker.
Wirtz, who is the Reds' record signing has featured just once this summer, during an impressive showing in a behind-closed-doors match against Stoke, before the squad departed for Asia. But today represented a significant step up in intensity and opposition.
Here's a look at what we spotted from his debut as he played the first half against AC Milan.
Moments of brilliance
The German midfielder showcased several impressive moments with the ball, including a cheeky flick over a defender’s head that looked almost playful. His quick give-and-go style suggests a promising partnership with Mohamed Salah is on the horizon.
A sensational debut from the record signing, who made everything look effortless as he glided across the pitch, leaving Milan struggling to contain him.
Position still up for debate
Interestingly, Wirtz began the game listed as Liverpool’s centre-forward, but Harvey Elliott pushed forward to create a front four alongside Salah and Rio Ngumoha on the wings.
Wirtz showed a sophisticated understanding of positioning and pressing. He frequently occupied advanced positions but was also keen to drop deep to receive the ball between the lines, drifting around the edge of the penalty area as he sought to work his magic. Although it’s not his natural role, he has successfully fulfilled this function before.
Exciting things to come
Overall, it was an encouraging performance from the attacking midfielder. He completed 91% of his 32 passes, registered 36 touches, and thrilled fans with some excellent link-up play. There’s more to come, but he’s already made a bright start in Liverpool red.
He looked assured in midfield, creative with the ball, and tactically aware—traits that give the Reds fresh hope in their summer rebuild.
Wirtz is almost certain to earn some more invaluable minutes in Japan. The Reds will then head back to England for a two-match series against Athletic Club, followed by a Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium. Wirtz is anticipated to make his Premier League debut in Liverpool’s season opener against Bournemouth.
