AFCON organizers can't resist pointed response after Jamie Carragher's Mohamed Salah comments

Africa's soccer federation has shown its support for Mohamed Salah amid the drama that currently surrounds him at Liverpool.

Salah's comments in the Elland Road mixed zone on Saturday night have dominated the English soccer agenda in recent days, after he suggested that Liverpool has thrown him under the bus this season.

Salah signed a new two-year deal at Anfield to tie him to Liverpool until 2027 earlier this year, but at the moment is unclear whether he will ever play for the club again.

The 33-year-old's explosive comments have divided opinion, with Jamie Carragher having been the most vocally critical of Salah, but John Terry saying earlier this week that he agreed with him.

Salah has been left out of the Liverpool squad for Tuesday's Champions League game against Inter Milan, and his last opportunity to appear for Liverpool before he heads off for the Africa Cup of Nations comes against Brighton on Saturday.

At the moment, it seems unlikely that Salah will be involved in that game, with Arne Slot clearly taking a firm stance against his star player by leaving him out of the squad that traveled to Milan.

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations starting, the African federation posted on social media: "Class is forever. See you at #TotalEnergiesAFCON2025, Mo."

Slot's pre-game press conference in Milan on Monday was dominated by questions about Salah.

The Liverpool head coach had this to say when asked if he feels as though his relationship with Salah has broken down – which is what Salah had hinted at during his incendiary interview in West Yorkshire: "No, that's not the way I feel. But he has the right to feel how he feels things.

"I haven't felt that at all until Saturday evening for sure, because I think when I didn't play him anymore, usually players don't like the manager then that much.

"But he was very respectful to my staff members, to his teammates and he trained really hard. So, to an extent it was a surprise to me when I heard after the game that he gave the comments he gave.

"But, as I said, it's not the first and not the last time that when a player doesn't play, I'm not sure if he was emotional or not, but that he says something similar to what he did. But I think our, my reaction to that is also clear and that's that he's not here with us tonight."
