Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has had his say on Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who is eyeing Shearer's English top-flight record of 260 goals.
Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Manchester City striker Erling Haaland after his winning goal against Brentford on Sunday.
The Norway international has scored in nine consecutive matches for club and country after netting the only goal in the 1-0 win at Brentford. The former Borussia Dortmund forward has already scored 12 goals across all competitions for Pep Guardiola's side this season - nine of which have been scored in the Premier League.
Haaland has now scored 94 goals in the English top-flight, with many tipping him to break the all-time record of 260 set by Shearer. That has inevitably led to comparisons between the two, with Shearer's goals spread across 14 seasons at Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.
And the Englishman has now had his say on the man who could one day take away his famous milestone if he avoids any major injuries and stays in England. "I'm quite happy with my career, but what I would say about Erling is he's an absolute beast," Shearer told Sky Sports on Monday.
"I love what I see. I've got huge respect for him.
"I don't see a weakness. He's quick, he's strong, obviously he can score goals, great in the air, and he's playing in a brilliant team that will always create chances for him, so keep the debate going."
Asked after Sunday's game in west London for his assessment of Haaland's fine form, Guardiola simply said: “He’s the best. The year of the treble, he scored – what? – 50 million goals?
"I think he’s part of the club now, he’s settled. He feels now that it’s mine.”
