Alan Shearer has revealed where he thinks Manchester United will finish this season, but insists one player must improve if Ruben Amorim is to guide his team to a more successful campaign than last year. United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, tied on 18 points with four other clubs.
Amorim's side struggled to get out of the blocks this season. They won just one of their first five games in all competitions, including a defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, and looked to be bracing for another difficult campaign. However, now 11 games into the Premier League season, things appear to have turned around for United.
They are undefeated in their last five league matches and sit just four points off local rivals and title contenders Manchester City. Although Amorim would have preferred to be playing in Europe, the absence of midweek matches has allowed his team to rest effectively between weekends - something many of their close rivals cannot do.
Moving forward, United will only have to focus on the Premier League and the FA Cup when that comes around. So, the curse of losing to Tottenham in last season's Europa League final could now prove to be a blessing for Amorim. Shearer believes the club are set for a much more positive campaign.
He told Betfair: “The draw at the weekend for Manchester United [against Tottenham] is an improvement, yeah. They're far from the finished article. I still think there's a lot of work to be done, and I don't expect them to finish in the top six. I would think somewhere around 7th–8th, as I said, for Man United, so that is improvement.
“They were miles off it last season, they were terrible, so for them to finish there and then if they were to finish 6th, 7th, 8th, then yeah, that's improvement. But there's still a lot of work to be done.”
United had the fifth-highest spend in the summer transfer window among Premier League clubs. One of their key signings was Benjamin Sesko in a deal worth £73.7m, but the Slovenian international has endured a slow start to life in England.
What won’t help the 22-year-old is the fact he is set to miss a month of football with a knee injury suffered during United’s clash with Tottenham. But when he does return to action, Shearer believes he must improve.
He added: “One player that must do better is Benjamin Sesko. I guess, after the 70-odd million pounds they paid for him. That was a lot of money, it was too much, but that's the market. He's had a tough start. I don't expect huge things from him though, no.
“I think he's a good player, not sure he's any more than that. I guess he came on at the weekend and had two really good chances, should have put at least one of them away. It's been a tough start for him with the money that they've paid.”
United will look to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League on Monday when they face Everton at Old Trafford.
