Alan Shearer's Viktor Gyokeres comments prove all the pressure is on Arsenal this season

6 hours ago 3

Alan Shearer believes that Viktor Gyokeres is the best individual signing this summer and will thrive in the Premier League this season.

The Swedish striker silenced his critics by scoring twice in the second half of Arsenal’s 5–0 win over Leeds, just a week after facing heavy scrutiny for a poor debut against Manchester United.

Gyokeres grabbed the Gunners' third goal with a solo run, gliding into the box before drilling a low finish into the bottom-left corner. Deep into stoppage time, he stepped up again, confidently converting from the penalty spot after Max Dowman was fouled in the area.

Gyokeres has had a slower start to life in England compared to Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike, who has found the net three times for the Reds in his first three games for the club.

When speaking about both strikers on the 'Rest is Football' podcast, Shearer said: "Hugo Ekitike has had a flying start, hasn't he?

"I'm reluctant to say that, being a Newcastle fan!

"Viktor Gyokeres could be a really important signing. I know he got two goals last weekend, which will do his confidence the world of good. I'll say that Gyokeres will be the best individual signing."

This summer, Arsenal has added several new faces to its squad, with Eberechi Eze potentially set to make his debut at Anfield.

The former Crystal Palace star completed a $91 million (£67 million) transfer earlier in the week.

Liverpool has already invested heavily this summer, securing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for $155 million (£116 million) and Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for $106 million (£79 million), as well as Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

However, the Reds may be prepared to spend even more before the September 1 deadline on Alexander Isak, should he become available, as well as Marc Guehi.

Liverpool faces Arsenal in the third round of fixtures this weekend, with Mikel Arteta's side wanting to stake its claim for the Premier League title after coming second for three consecutive seasons.

The Reds have managed to maintain an unbeaten start to the season, but Arne Slot's players have struggled defensively, conceding a two-goal advantage in all of their opening games. However, the Gunners have more to prove.

Liverpool.com says: While Liverpool has struggled within games, the Reds have found a way to win, which is what champions do. Arsenal has been heavily criticized for its lack of spending in previous transfers, but now it has bought in the likes of Gyokeres, Eze, and Zubimendi. All eyes will be on whether or not Mikel Arteta can get his squad over the line.
