Alan Shearer spots Liverpool trend that should 'worry' Arsenal and Man City

2 hours ago 2

Alan Shearer has told Arsenal and Manchester City they should be worried after seeing Liverpool make a perfect start to its title defense, despite not hitting its best form so far.

The Reds made it four wins out of four to start the new season at the weekend, although they need yet another late winner as Mohamed Salah's stoppage-time penalty earned them a 1-0 win at Burnley.

After a busy summer in the transfer window, Arne Slot’s side has not quite been at its best yet, having needed to strike late in all four of its league games so far, having also lost the Community Shield on penalties to Crystal Palace last month.

Nevertheless, Liverpool is living up to its tag as the favorite to win the Premier League crown again, sitting at the top of the table after four straight wins, including a 1-0 victory over last season’s runner-up Arsenal.

The likes of Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola will be hoping to rein the Reds in as the season progresses, although Shearer feels that, with the addition of Alexander Isak to throw into the mix now, Liverpool’s rivals should be worried.

“I would be extremely happy if I were them, they’ve not played well at all, yet they’ve won four games out of four,” Shearer told The Rest is Football Podcast.

“They’ve [also] got a £125million centre-forward to come in as well.”

Host Gary Lineker, spotting an opportunity to poke fun at the Newcastle legend, responded: “Who’s that Al?”

Shearer replied: “I dunno, I’ve forgot his name, I’m not sure.”

The former England international then added: “I would be really happy with that [four wins out of four], you’d have to be, wouldn’t you?

“For the other teams, it has to be really worrying that they’ve been nowhere near their best, but they’ve won four out of four, they’ve found a way!”

Liverpool turns its attention to the Champions League next as it faces Atletico Madrid in its opening league phase game of the season on Wednesday.

The Reds are then back in Premier League action on Saturday as Everton visits Anfield in the first Merseyside derby of the campaign, with Slot’s side aiming to make it five wins out of five before Arsenal hosts City on Sunday.

Liverpool.com says: That’s a big weekend for this season’s title hopefuls. If Liverpool does win against Everton, then that will pile the pressure on Arsenal and City, even at this early stage of the campaign.

Neither team will want to lose more ground on the Reds, especially if, as many are predicting, there’s still a lot more to come from Slot’s side.
