Alan Shearer takes aim at 'remarkable' Chelsea spending with triple transfer warning

4 hours ago 2

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has insisted that Chelsea are still not ready to challenge for the Premier League title despite spending over £1billion under the current ownership.

The Blues enjoyed their best season to date under Clearlake Capital last term, winning the Conference League and qualifying for the Champions League. They followed that up by lifting the Club World Cup in the summer.

Since the takeover at Stamford Bridge, over £1bn has been invested in players with millions more raised through sales. However, many have been signed for big fees and failed with only a handful becoming successes.

The club's transfer strategy has repeatedly been criticised throughout the years and this season, the signings of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens have been scrutinised, with the pair costing a combined fee of close to £90m.

After a busy summer of change, Enzo Maresca's side have endured a slow start in the Premier League. The Blues currently find themselves eighth in the Premier League with pressure already building on Maresca.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer has claimed that Chelsea still need three more major signings to establish themselves as title challengers, despite the heavy investment made by Todd Boehly and co. "I think Chelsea are a very different football club to anything else," he said.

Enzo Maresca celebrates Chelsea's win over Benfica

"They do things very differently and as soon as you sign up to Chelsea, you know the rules. Basically, you can't lose three games on the spin. That's why this weekend is huge for them. You know the pressure you're under; you know the tag that comes with going to Chelsea as a manager.

"As for them spending over £1billion, I don't see them as ready to challenge for the Premier League title which, when you consider what they've spent, is remarkable. I still think they need a goalkeeper, centre-half and a top-class centre-forward. I still think they're short in the three most important positions on the pitch. It's run very differently to anything else."
