Alexander Isak breaks silence on blunt Newcastle exit statement after sealing Liverpool transfer

2 days ago 4

Alexander Isak has bid farewell to Newcastle United following his record-breaking transfer to Liverpool. The Swedish striker had a summer filled with tension as he trained separately from his team-mates in an effort to push through the move.

On transfer deadline day, Liverpool splashed out $167 million (£125 million) to lure Isak away from Newcastle, after the forward had helped the club secure Champions League qualification and Carabao Cup success.

Despite being a fan favourite on Tyneside, his relationship with the supporters soured due to his manoeuvring for a move and a controversial statement as he sought a switch to the Reds.

In a post on Instagram, Isak expressed: "I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.

"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.

"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle."

Newcastle's announcement of the deal was more succinct. A brief statement read: "Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."

Despite the apparent animosity towards the Swedish striker, Newcastle star Anthony Gordon did pen a farewell message to his former teammate.

He wrote: "Regardless of the situation and what's gone on. It's been a pleasure to play with you. One of the best chemistries I've had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate. I wish you nothing but the best brother," alongside a red love heart emoji.

Isak will link up with the Sweden squad as he looks to get his first minutes of the season and build up his fitness ahead of a potential Liverpool debut after the international break.

Speaking after completing his move to Anfield, he said: "It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

Isak added: “I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.

“I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
