Alexander Isak could face repeat of Liverpool nightmare if serious injury is confirmed

Liverpool is awaiting a full diagnosis of the injury that Alexander Isak sustained against Tottenham this weekend, with the player signed from Newcastle in September

Though Alexander Isak wasn't stretchered off and he was able to hobble from the field with some assistance after scoring against Tottenham, it is possible that the Liverpool striker has suffered a major injury.

Scans will be undertaken to determine the full extent of the issue, but Isak must be fearing the worst. Immediately after his second goal in the Premier League for Liverpool went in, he went down in agony.

Micky van de Ven clattered into Isak in an unsuccessful attempt to block his shot, but the Swede let fly and broke the deadlock. Liverpool is now keeping its fingers crossed that it wasn't as bad as it looked.

"I don't have any news on [Isak], but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn't come back on the pitch and doesn't try to come back [it's not a good sign]," Slot said in his post-match press conference.

"Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn't go on, but if a player doesn't even try to come back that's usually not a good thing.

"I cannot say anything more than that. That is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it. I haven't spoken to him about it yet.

"It's a good thing that he scored: a good goal, assisted by Florian Wirtz. I said last week already, players are getting better and the team is getting better.

"Again, it wasn't perfect today, especially not in the last 10 minutes, but in the meantime we pick up points and I see the team developing in a way I like to see."

In the worst-case scenario, if Isak has an ACL injury or something similar, he could be out for a number of months. Though it would be premature to speculate on that, it is a legitimate fear.

Last summer, in a bid to force through a transfer move to Liverpool, Isak missed the whole of pre-season. His troubles in getting up to speed at Anfield have been put down to that.

But if this injury proves to be as bad as possible — something no one wants — it couldn't be completely ruled out that it could happen again.

Liverpool.com says: Isak has been so unlucky since he signed for the Reds. Brought in for a fee of $169 million (£125 million), everyone knows his quality. The problem has simply been fitness.

If this injury does mean he is out for a number of months, it will be a hammer blow. Isak and Liverpool must simply hope for the best, and even that could see him absent for a few weeks.
