Alexander Isak may not get favorite squad number if he completes Liverpool transfer

Liverpool has confirmed its squad numbers for the new campaign, with all of its new players getting permanent numbers having donned temporary ones during pre-season.

Florian Wirtz is the new No.7, while Hugo Ekitike will wear the No.22, and Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have taken the numbers 30 and 6 respectively.

There will likely be more player arrivals before the summer is out, which means more squad number news on the horizon, and the player Liverpool fans are most excited about possibly signing is Alexander Isak.

The vast majority of soccer fans thought that Liverpool's transfer market activity — as far as attacking signings were concerned — was done when the club secured the services of Hugo Ekitike last week.

But despite having committed to a gross spend of close to $400 million on new players, the Reds remain keen on signing Isak, who would undoubtedly command a Premier League record fee.

Liverpool saw an offer of just shy of of $150 million for Isak rejected by Newcastle on Friday, and just hours on from that rejected bid it was widely reported that the Reds had no intention of making a second bid without receiving encouragement from Newcastle that a deal could be done.

Still, it feels as though this transfer saga is far from over, with Isak having principally agreed personal terms with Liverpool over a move to Anfield.

If Isak does end up moving to Merseyside, he may need to change his squad number from the one he has at Newcastle. Isak currently dons the No.14 but that is currently occupied at Liverpool by Federico Chiesa.

Of course, Chiesa's own future is far from certain after a season in which he made just one Premier League start and one Champions League start — both of which were effective dead rubbers.

If Chiesa returns to Italy, amid apparent interest from a number of clubs, Isak would be free to take the 14. "When I signed for Newcastle, out of the numbers available, 14 was the most iconic one," Isak said as he explained last season why he wears the No.14 for the Magpies.

The No.9, which Isak wears when playing for Sweded, could also be up for grabs at Liverpool depending on what happens with Darwin Nunez between now and the window closing.

Nunez was wanted by Napoli earlier in the summer but the Serie A champion was unwilling to meet Liverpool's asking price, and he is now being linked with Juventus amid Dusan Vlahovic's possible exit.
