Sweden head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has revealed he expects Alexander Isak to meet up with the Sweden squad on Monday after completing his Liverpool medical.
The Newcastle forward is closing in on a move to the Premier League champions after a record-breaking £125 million ($169M) deal was agreed between the clubs on deadline day. He was seen arriving at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, and his move is expected to be confirmed before the window shuts.
It ends the long-running saga that has dominated the summer window, with Isak refusing to play for Newcastle and essentially going on strike to force through a transfer to Liverpool.
Despite that, Isak still earned a call-up to the Sweden squad last week and is expected to play some part against Slovenia and Kosovo over the international break.
Tomasson revealed he anticipates the 25-year-old will travel directly to Sweden after his medical is concluded on Merseyside.
“Every person in the whole world has read all the headlines in the last weeks, and even today,” the Sweden boss said on Monday. “Nothing is confirmed yet.
“I spoke with Alex yesterday, and I spoke with him this morning. We expect him during the day.
“Alex is extremely professional and has a great mentality. He is very stable and in control, so we are not afraid of that.”
“He’s not able to play for 90 minutes,” Tomasson added. “But he can be a game-changer.
“He is a great lad. I have spoken about his character a lot of times. He is very professional. I think the most thing for us here at Sweden is that he wants this team.
“He wants it badly, and he wants to perform well, and he wants to qualify for the World Cup. He is in a good mental place. Regarding what we spoke about, it stays with me and Alex. I think that is normal.”
Isak’s move to Anfield will eclipse the previous British transfer record of £107M ($145M) that Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Reds are still pursuing a deal to sign Marc Guehi, despite Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner claiming it would not be possible to replace the England international before the window shuts.
Liverpool lodged a £35M ($47M) offer on Saturday for the defender, and there is growing hope a deal can be concluded on deadline day.
