Liverpool forward Alexander Isak has been pictured stepping up his recovery from the broken leg that he suffered in the act of scoring against Tottenham in December.

Isak is yet to get going at Liverpool since his $169 million (£125 million) move from Newcastle United last summer, but is expected to play again before the end of the season. So far, he has scored three times in 16 appearances in all competitions.

Ahead of the Reds hosting Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday, Isak has been spotted at the AXA Training Centre, where he was kicking a ball inside the gym and taking part in various exercises.

"He’s not even on the pitch yet", Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said last month. "He’s just out of his walker.

"So that tells you that he’s not on the pitch yet and not expected on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work. It’s going to take a while before he’s back — as we knew."

Though a date has still not been confirmed for whether Isak can be expected to return, the sight of him stepping up his recovery will be welcome for Reds fans who are still waiting to see the best of him.

Frenchman Hugo Ekitike, another summer signing, has done well in his absence, but the more options available to Liverpool, the better.

"I think they're talking about a 4-4-2 diamond, which probably looks a little bit different when they're defending," former Reds striker Emile Heskey told Liverpool.com this week.

"I think that should suit both Ekitike and Isak.

"Ekitike is a nine but he is very versatile. He could play a number 10 role if needs be and he runs all over the place, so he could probably chase into the channel and disturb the back four.

"Ekitike is fantastic. I love the way he plays with no fear. That's tough as well because if you come for a certain price, everyone starts to worry.

"He doesn't worry. He just plays football and doesn't care what anyone else says. He just goes out there, plays his football, and tries to be the best he possibly can.

"Florian Wirtz and Ekitike are forming a bit of a relationship where they understand each other, and these are chances they have got to be taking."
