Liverpool was held to a second consecutive draw in 2026, ending with a 2-2 result against Fulham on Sunday.

Despite Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo seemingly securing the win for the Reds after Harry Wilson's initial goal, Harrison Reed equalized with a stunning strike in the 96th minute. Following Chelsea's 1-1 stalemate with Manchester City, Liverpool now sits three points clear of the London side in fourth place ahead of Thursday's Premier League clash with Arsenal.

The Gunners are a staggering 14 points ahead of Liverpool, with Arne Slot's team now focusing on securing a top-four finish for next season. But you're already aware of all this. What might have slipped under your radar, however, are some intriguing subplots that unfolded at Craven Cottage on the day. Here are the best moments missed from behind the scenes...

VAR chant

Soccer fans continue to be split over the prickly debates surrounding the ongoing use of video technology to assist Premier League officials. Complaints about VAR have become a regular feature of the game in recent years.

Whether you love it or loathe it, it's rare to get through a match without its presence being felt.

While many supporters are thoroughly fed up with VAR's constant intrusion into the modern game, there was an unexpected call for it during the closing stages of this match.

As Milos Kerkez cleared a ball to the back post late in the game, the Fulham fans at that end of the pitch were convinced they had grounds for a penalty, leading to a rare endorsement of VAR. "VAR! VAR!" echoed around the stadium in what must surely be a first.

The folks at Stockley Park must have been chuffed to bits hearing fans finally rallying behind its use. However, it's more likely that the supporters were taking the mickey after seeing the match delayed for lengthy periods twice over the goals from Harry Wilson and Florian Wirtz. We're fairly certain this terrace chanting for VAR's intervention won't become a trend.

Jimenez's strop

While it might have been a decent point for Fulham, Mexican striker Raul Jimenez found himself in a constant tussle with Ibrahima Konate, coming off second best in a few strength tests against the Frenchman.

It was toward the end of the first half when Konate gently nudged Jimenez out of the way of a long ball to comfortably win a header, causing the Cottagers forward to head straight towards referee Craig Pawson near the centre circle in a huff.

Jimenez was livid that he wasn't awarded the foul and made his feelings known to the official after the nudge. His anger didn't sway Pawson, though, who simply waved play on as Liverpool regained possession.

Mac Allister also angry

But the annoyance and frustration at the referee's decision wasn't just limited to the Fulham players. Not by a long shot. Alexis Mac Allister also vented his spleen at Pawson after not being awarded a foul when tackled by Jimenez in the first half.

To be completely fair, from the press box perspective, it appeared the Fulham player won the ball cleanly, though the tackle left Mac Allister sprawled on the turf as play continued. The Liverpool midfielder made a beeline for Pawson's general area after eventually hauling himself upright.

However, much like Jimenez's tetchy response moments before, Mac Allister's protests simply bounced off the referee.
