Alexis Mac Allister has expressed his frustration at Liverpool’s drop-off from last season and admitted the Reds have “changed too many things”.

Liverpool won the Premier League title at a canter last term, but currently sits 15 points behind leaders Arsenal at the halfway stage of the campaign. While results have steadied somewhat in recent weeks, the Reds are still reeling from a run of nine defeats in 12 during the autumn months, and performances continue to underwhelm.

Liverpool made tough work of recent wins over nine-man Tottenham Hotspur and bottom-place Wolverhampton Wanderers, while it was held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Leeds United on New Year’s Day. Even Virgil van Dijk admitted after the latter that he could sense the fans’ frustrations at full-time.

Mac Allister is among those whose standards have dropped this season compared to last, and he is clearly frustrated. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Fulham, the World Cup winner seemed to imply Liverpool made too many alterations in the summer transfer window, with eight first-team signings brought to Anfield ahead of the season.

“There are not many chances of Liverpool retaining the title,” Mac Allister told Sky Sports. “I hate to say it, but it is quite clear.

“Arsenal is in a really good moment, Manchester City is quite close, but we are not close in terms of performances or results, so I do not see us becoming champions again.

“It hurts because this should be a moment when we are enjoying the Premier League, which we won, and we should be in a much better place than we are.

“So it hurts. Many things have changed from last season and it is not ideal, but that is the situation we are in and we have to face it and keep working to get better.”

Pushed on my why the champions have struggled to maintain momentum, Mac Allister replied: “Many things changed as I said. New players came in to replace those who left, we changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself.”

Despite that, Mac Allister said that Liverpool can still experience cup success if the team gels in the coming months.

“It is quite clear we have amazing players, it is just about becoming a team, that is what we need,” said the midfielder.

“Personally, without the team I am nothing and I feel like we all need to get better and think about the guy next to me, become a better team and that will help us and raise our level.

“For me it is quite clear, but in terms of goals, the Champions League is there and we will definitely fight for that one because it would be a very nice one. And the FA Cup, which is a really important cup for English teams.

“We are still there, we are going to play soon and that is another goal for us. When you play for Liverpool, you always have to fight for everything.”
