Alexis Mac Allister makes 'difficult' admission as Liverpool handed major injury boost

2 weeks ago 47

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister says it has been a "difficult" period for him after he spent the summer sidelined with the injury that saw him sit out the Reds' last couple of games of the 2024/25 season.

But the Argentine has handed Arne Slot a major injury boost this week by returning to training. And he has now confirmed that he should be fit enough to play a full part when Liverpool kicks off the new campaign in a couple of weeks.

"It has been a long time, a difficult time, because it is never nice to be injured," Mac Allister told the Reds' official website. "Now I’m feeling good, it’s just about time and getting fit because they have had a good pre-season so they are definitely in a different physical shape, so I have to get used [to it] again. But it’s nice to be out there.

"It’s hard to explain [the injury] because it’s not just one spot that you say, ‘OK, we have to focus on this.’ It’s like two or three different things that I’ve been struggling [with] for a couple of months.

"At the end, we found the solution; we have been working a lot in the gym, on my structure. It’s hard to explain it, but as I said, now I’m feeling good, and for me, that’s the most important thing."

While tomorrow's game with Yokohama Marinos is likely to come too soon for Mac Allister to make a return to action, he confirmed that he should be back in time for the start of the new season.

"As I said, I need to work on my physical shape and get used again to the level of the boys," he outlined.

"But I’m feeling really, really good, training with the team. I'm pretty sure I’m going to be fine for the beginning of the season and hopefully for the [Community Shield] as well."

Mac Allister has been impressed by the quality of the new signings that Liverpool has made, too, with Florian Wirtz the most expensive to date.

"It’s amazing," Mac Allister said of the level of player that has been brought to the club. "I think we’ve made great additions to the team, and they are showing in every single training [session] how good they are.

"We are really happy with that. Now it’s about knowing the characteristics of the new players, getting used to playing together. I’m pretty sure that this will be a very good season for us.

"They brought new energy, good energy, especially Jeremie [Frimpong]! They are always smiling, you can see how happy they are to be here and hopefully they can help us to win more titles."

Liverpool.com says: Mac Allister will be a vital player again for Liverpool and Slot again this season. He is one of the best midfielders in the world and perhaps doesn't get the recognition that he deserves.
