Alexis Mac Allister is being linked with a surprise switch from Liverpool to Manchester United at the end of the season.

The Reds midfielder only moved to Anfield in 2023, and played a key role in the team's title win last season, but the Daily Mirror reports that he could leave Merseyside this summer.

United is said to have Mac Allister on a list of possible midfield targets as it looks to revamp an area of the squad that has struggled in recent times. Mac Allister is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, but he has struggle to find his best form this season, reportedly raising the possibility that he could be sold in the summer.

Were he to complete an unlikely move to United, he would link up with fellow Argentina star Lisandro Martinez, who Mac Allister is good friends with.

Mac Allister spoke about his friendship with Martinez after a 2-2 draw between Liverpool and United last year, in which Martinez scored the opening goal.

“I have a very good relationship with Licha [Martinez],” Mac Allister said in a post-game interview with TNT Sports Mexico, before adding with a chuckle: “It's incredible because he doesn't score a goal against anyone, but he scores a goal against us. So nothing, I teased him a bit.

“I’ll probably stop to say hello and chat for a while. And well, I wish him the best. I knew that his wife was pregnant, so I hope he comes back full of joy, good health and that they can be very happy as a family.”

Mac Allister has played a part in the revival of Liverpool's season in recent weeks. Liverpool has won four of its last five games in all competitions, and earlier this month he spoke to club media about the reasons behind the team's upturn in form

"We feel like we are in a good moment, in a much better moment than the beginning of the season," Mac Allister told Liverpoolfc.com. "We are improving as a team – which is the most important thing – and now we're looking forward to this amazing game.

"The manager had a really good meeting where he said that we needed to improve in both boxes. That's what we wanted and I think we showed it in the last two games.

"But we were more aggressive, we pressed a little bit more. That's what we want and that's what we want to get and be consistent on that. I think it's going to be key.

"We have many players that are injured, so it's not that easy, but we are getting there. I think we are all happy with our last two performances.

"We played against two teams that were a little bit more aggressive and tried to build from the back, which is for us maybe better. We are in a good moment but we need to keep working and keep improving."
