Alexis Mac Allister is looking to open contract negotiations with Liverpool, with the midfielder's father dismissing reported interest from Manchester United.

Mac Allister will be three years into a five-year contract at the conclusion of the current season, having arrived during the summer of 2023 from Brighton. Earlier this week, the Argentina international was linked with a surprise approach from United, but the player's father, Carlos, maintains the 27-year-old is entirely committed to his present club.

Mac Allister senior, himself a former professional with Boca Juniors and Argentina, disclosed his son is awaiting progress over a new contract with Liverpool.

"Alexis is only thinking about Liverpool at the moment," said Mac Allister's dad, as quoted by winwin. "We are waiting for an offer to renew his contract. We'll see what the club's plan is.

"We'll wait and see what happens in terms of the renewal. That's all."

Mac Allister, who has won silverware in both campaigns at Anfield thus far, was pivotal in last term's Premier League success as he featured 25 times for Arne Slot's side.

Mac Allister started his career in Argentina, breaking through at Argentinos Juniors and winning a league title with Boca Juniors, before making a name for himself at Brighton.

He scored 20 goals in 112 games during his three-and-a-half-year spell on the south coast, helping Brighton finish sixth in the Premier League table during his final campaign there, placing just one position lower than Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

That persuaded the Reds to stump up the cash.

Liverpool agreed to a £55 million ($74.7 million) deal to bring Mac Allister to Merseyside. He's since played 132 games for the Reds, helping them win the Premier League title and Carabao Cup.

Mac Allister has struggled with his form and fitness this season, having picked up an injury toward the back end of last term.

But he's starting to show his best, with Liverpool still in the hunt for FA Cup and Champions League glory.

It remains highly unlikely that Mac Allister will join United. The last player to be transferred between Liverpool and United was Phil Chisnall, who left Old Trafford for Anfield in 1964.

Michael Owen was the most recent high-profile player to represent both clubs, winning the Ballon d'Or at Liverpool and the Premier League title at United.
