Alisson could miss Liverpool fixtures vs Man Utd and Man City as Reds dealt fresh injury update

2 hours ago 12

Alisson is reportedly set to be ruled out until the November international break, meaning he will miss Liverpool’s crucial matches against Manchester United, Real Madrid and Manchester City in the coming weeks.

The goalkeeper, who has been among the Reds’ standout performers so far this season, sustained an injury in the second half of the midweek Champions League defeat against Galatasaray.

Arne Slot indicated after the game that he didn’t expect an immediate return for Alisson and ruled him out of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Chelsea. The 33-year-old was omitted from the Brazil squad for the upcoming fixtures against South Korea and Japan announced on Thursday, and could also miss Liverpool’s matches in between the October and November international breaks.

According to The Athletic, while a full prognosis is not expected for another 24-48 hours, a scan on Thursday confirmed he will not be available for the next six weeks.

That period includes Liverpool’s Premier League clashes against Manchester United, Brentford, Aston Villa and Manchester City. There are also crucial Champions League encounters against Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid, plus a fourth-round Carabao Cup tie with Crystal Palace.

Slot will almost certainly be asked about Alisson’s situation in Friday’s press conference ahead of the trip to Chelsea.

Alisson sustained his injury in the second half of Tuesday's defeat against Galatasaray

Speaking after the Galatasaray defeat, the Liverpool head coach said: “It is never positive if you go off like this.

“You can be sure that he is not playing on Saturday. We will see how long it takes but he definitely won’t play against Chelsea.”

In his place, Giorgi Mamardashvili will presumably start in nets for the Reds.

The Georgian signed for Liverpool over the summer and made his competitive debut in last month’s Carabao Cup win over Southampton.

Mamardashvili came off the bench in midweek and will likely start against Chelsea

Mamardashvili replaced Alisson in the midweek Champions League loss and is seen as one of the league’s best back-up stoppers.

Many will view his brief stint in the team over the coming weeks as his first audition to be Liverpool’s next long-term no.1.

As for Alisson, his latest injury continues a wretched streak of setbacks. He missed 16 games last season through injury and was unavailable for over two months of the previous campaign with a hamstring issue.
