Alisson could be out until November at the earliest, with Liverpool expecting the goalkeeper to be sidelined for at least a few weeks.
The Brazilian hurt himself while saving a shot from Victor Osimhen in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Galatasaray, and it did not take long for a decision to be taken for him to be replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Arne Slot said after the game that Alisson, who missed a sizeable chunk of games last season due to injury, will almost certainly not play at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
“It is never positive if you go off like this," Slot said in his post-game interview with TNT Sports. "You can be sure that he is not playing on Saturday. We will see how long it takes but he definitely won’t play against Chelsea.”
Speaking separately in his post-game press conference, Slot said: "When he sprinted back he felt something.
"I cannot tell you [exactly] because I am not a physio, but normally when a player sprints back, feels something, goes to the floor and doesn't come back onto the pitch [it's not good].
"If my player is on the floor, I nine out of 10 times fear the worst – and by the worst I mean he cannot continue. That's what happened with Alisson.
"Normally, he will not be able to play Saturday. That's 99.9 per cent – I've already said 100 per cent, but let's make it 99.9 [although] I think it's 100."
Liverpool expert James Pearce reported that Alisson is yet to undergo a scan but the club is expected to gain some clarity on the Brazilian's injury at some point on Thursday.
Pearce reports that Alisson will be out for at least a few weeks, which will keep him out until after the October international break.
Meanwhile, the prognosis on Hugo Ekitike remains unclear after he was also forced off during the second half of the loss in Turkey.
Speaking about Ekitike's injury after the game, Slot said: "He felt something when he had to reach for the ball. I think we all know which one it was when we were trying to force something.
"I think at that moment in time, on the other side there was someone on the floor as well, so the referee blew his whistle and I wasn't even thinking we had an injury, but Hugo felt something.
"After the game, that's always the difficult thing with these moments when players feel like it is not too bad, but when you just walk around it is something different than when you make a sprint or have to shoot on target.
"He said he couldn't continue so we had to take him off. Let's see how he is for the weekend."
