All 38 of Jurgen Klopp's key signings, how they fared, and where they are now

1 week ago 51

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp inherited a midtable side when he joined the club in the fall of 2015. Within a few years (and with a series of strong signings), he transformed the Reds into the champions of Europe.

Some of Klopp's signings (Sadio Mane, Alisson Becker) worked out better than others (Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain), but the German gaffer boasts a strong record overall in the transfer market.

This list includes all players signed for prominent and select free transfers who became free transfers, including teenage academy products. For example, if Rio Ngumoha (Arne Slot signing) joined Liverpool from Chelsea under Klopp's reign, he would count. All signings are in chronological order.

Marko Grujic (Serbia, CM, £5.1 million)

Klopp's first signing was the winter deal for then Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic. He was an on-and-off squad option for several years before being sold to Porto. He now plays for AEK Athens in Greece.

Sadio Mane (Senegal, LW, £30 million)

The first blockbuster signing of the Klopp reign was the pacey winger from Southampton who always tormented Liverpool. After practically completing club football with the Reds, Mane moved on to Bayern Munich in 2022 before joining Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League a year later.

Loris Karius (Germany, GK, £4.7 million)

Karius was signed to compete with Simon Mignolet for the starting goalkeeping position, a gig he won and then subsequently floundered after a shocking 2018 Champions League final performance. He had stints at Beşiktaş and Union Berlin on loan before making his permanent moves to Newcastle and Schalke, his current club.

Joel Matip

Joel Matip's lifespan at Liverpool nearly completely overlapped with Jurgen Klopp's

Joel Matip (Cameroon, CB, free)

Matip joined Liverpool in the 2016 transfer window on a free from Schalke. Aside from a few injury woes, the Cameroon international was a consistent member of the Reds backline until 2024, when he announced his retirement from football.

Ragnar Klavan (Estonia, CB, £4.2 million)

The Estonian centerback spent two seasons under Klopp at Liverpool as a rotation option before moving to Cagliari in Italy. He finished his career playing in his home country.

Georginio Wijnaldum (Netherlands, CM, £25 million)

The all-action midfielder was a regular starter for Klopp from 2016-2021 — a stint marked by his two goals against Barcelona in the 2019 UCL semifinals — before he joined PSG on a free transfer. After a loan to Roma, Wijnaldum followed Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in 2023.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt, RW, £43.9 million)

Briefly the club's record signing, Salah has blossomed from a compelling talent into one of the greatest Premier League forwards of all-time. The Egyptian ranks third amongst Liverpool's all-time goal scorers.

Mo Salah

Salah and Klopp worked together from 2017 to 2024

Dominic Solanke (England, ST, £4 million from tribunal)

Solanke exploded with a strong 2017 preseason for the Reds before nearly finishing his first campaign at Anfield goalless. He endured a similar stretch at Bournemouth before tapping into his talent, eventually earning a big-money move to Tottenham.

Andy Robertson (Scotland, LB, £10 million)

Brought in to compete with Alberto Moreno for the LB position, Robertson quickly made the job his own. The industrious defender with a beauty of a left foot is currently a vice captain for the Reds and a rotation defensive option.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (England, CM, £35 million)

Klopp attempted to turn the longtime Arsenal man from a winger into a midfielder at Liverpool, a project that was a success (see: two goals vs Manchester City) before a devastating injury slowed the England international. He became a squad player before moving on to Besiktas in 2023. "The Ox" is currently a free agent.

Virgil Van Dijk (Netherlands, CB, £75 million)

The world's most expensive defender lived up to his billing, finishing second in the 2019 Ballon d'Or vote. Van Dijk is approaching his mid-30s, but is currently in his third year as the Reds' captain.

Naby Keita (Mali, CM, £52.75 million)

Keita signed for the Reds in 2017 but joined in the summer of 2018. A good friend of Sadio Mane's, the Mali international started strong but struggled with injuries and inconsistent form before leaving Liverpool in 2023 for Werder Bremen. He currently plays for Ludogorets.

Fabinho (Brazil, CM, £43.7 million)

Fabinho took time to find his footing but became a nailed-on starter once he did. The Brazilian started practically every game for Klopp from 2019 to 2023 before he was sold for a hefty fee to Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

Xhedran Shaqiri

Shaqiri, a fan favorite, worked under Klopp from 2018 to 2021

Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland, LW, £13.75 million)

The powerful Swiss forward looked to be just the reserve forward Klopp needed for his first six months at Liverpool before falling in and out of favor. Shaqiri joined Lyon in 2021 for a small fee and currently plays for Basel, his boyhood club.

Alisson Becker (Brazil, GK, £65 million)

Klopp and company took a major gamble on Alisson, signing a player with just one full year of European experience to a then GK-record fee. The Brazilian soon won the Yashin Trophy and is still arguably the best goalkeeper in world football.

Sepp van den Berg (Netherlands, CB, £4.4 million)

The Dutch defender was signed as a teenager from PEC Zwolle, but saw opportunities hard to find at Liverpool. After a series of successful loans, the Reds fetched a fee north of £20 million from Brentford for his services.

Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott grew from a boy to a man under Jurgen Klopp

Harvey Elliott (England, RW, £4.3 million tribunal)

The jewel of a dire 2019 window, Elliott eventually blossomed into a major rotation option for both Klopp and Slot, scoring the winner at PSG in last year's Champions League Round of 16. Liverpool's massive 2025 summer transfer window meant Elliott was surplus to requirements, inking a loan-to-buy deal with Aston Villa.

Adrian (Spain, GK, free)

The Spanish goalkeeper had some high moments (2019 Super Cup) and low ones (2020 UCL vs Atletico Madrid) across his lengthy stint with the club. The 39-year-old joined Betis, his boyhood club, in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer.

Takumi Minamino (Japan, LW, £7.25 million)

Minamino cooked the Reds in the Champions League for RB Salzburg and was purchased for a cut-price. He served as a cup specialist for Klopp before he was sold to Monaco (for double what he was bought for) in 2022.

Kostas Tsimikas (Greece, LB, £11.75 million)

"The Greek Scouser" was happy to serve as Andy Robertson's backup for five seasons, winning a heaping of silverware. Tsimikas is currently on loan at Roma.

Thiago Alcantara (Spain, CM, £27.4 million)

The Spanish maestro owned a frustrating injury record in England but was one of the world's finest players when fit — his stretch at the end of the 2021/22 season nearly powered Liverpool to an unlikely double. He retired from football in 2024 and is currently an assistant coach at Barcelona.

Diogo Jota (Portugal, LW, £45 million)

The late Jota was a success for a price tag many considered to be an overpay late in the 2020 summer window, serving a key forward option for both Klopp and Slot. He tragically passed away in an auto accident in the summer of 2025.

Diogo Jota

The late Diogo Jota worked under Klopp from 2020 to 2024

Stefan Bajcetic (Spain, CM, nominal fee)

Bajcetic joined from the Celta Vigo academy during the winter 2021 window and showed real promise under Klopp before a string of injuries and poor loans dimmed his potential.

Ben Davies (England, CB, £1.6 million)

Davies was arguably Klopp's first panic buy, recruited as an option to solve the team's 2021 center-back crisis. He was sold to Rangers for double the fee Liverpool paid and now plays for Oxford United on loan.

Ozan Kabak (Turkey, CB, loan)

Another dart throw in the 2021 injury debacle, Kabak started a handful of key UCL games for Klopp and played well. He returned to Germany after his loan was over and currently plays for Hoffenheim.

Kaide Gordon (England, LW, £3.6 million)

The once highly-regarded teenager was given a chance under Klopp midway through he 2021/22 season but never seized it. After a pair of poor loans, Gordon mostly features for Liverpool youth teams.

Ibrahima Konate (France, CB, £36 million)

Konate has been great value for money: the Frenchman is still an unquestioned starter at the club after his summer 2021 signing. However, the Premier League winner seems to be teetering towards a move to Real Madrid next summer.

Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz found his best form under Jurgen Klopp in 2022

Luis Diaz (Colombia, LW, £50 million)

The skillful Colombian winger was a revelation after his 2022 midseason signing, immediately sliding into Klopp's team. After a few decent campaigns in England, Liverpool surprisingly sold Diaz to Bayern Munich in 2025 for a massive fee.

Darwin Nunez (Uruguay, ST, £85 million): Arguably the most mercurial player to ever play for Liverpool, Nunez never quite lived up to his massive price tag. However, he captured the admiration of many fans and scored a bucket of clutch goals. He was sold to Saudi side Al-Hilal during the summer 2025 window at a slight loss.

Calvin Ramsay (Scotland, RB, £6.5 million)

Ramsay was supposed to slot in as Trent Alexander-Arnold's backup but didn't quite seem ready for his step-up from Aberdeen. After a few loans, the Scottish international is back in the Reds academy playing for youth teams.

Fabio Carvalho (Portugal, CAM, £7.7 million tribunal)

Carvalho looked to be a hit after a bargain transfer from Fulham in 2022. However, he found playing time hard to come by and joined Van den Berg at Brentford for a similar transfer fee around £20 million in 2024.

Ben Doak (Scotland, RW, £600,000)

Doak joined Liverpool from the Celtic academy in 2022 and broke into the Liverpool first team in 2023. He excelled on loan in 2024/25 and fetched Liverpool a fee north of £20 million from Bournemouth in 2025.

Arthur Melo (Brazil, CM, loan)

Melo was another crisis signing, although he was on loan. The Brazilian joined from Juventus on deadline day and made just a single appearance for the club. He currently plays for Fiorentina in Italy.

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands, LW, £44 million)

Liverpool pipped Manchester United to Gakpo's signature in the winter 2023 window. Gakpo has been a smash hit: he's a regular starter for new coach Slot and boasts a strong goalscoring record.

Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina, CM, £35 million)

The Reds bought Mac Allister at a knockdown price after discovering a key clause in his Brighton contract. He was exceptional during his first two years in Merseyside before seeing his form take a drop in 2025/26.

Dominik Szoboszali (Hungary, CM, £60.1 million)

Liverpool paid a pretty penny for Szoboszali's release clause. After some up and down form, the Hungarian international has emerged as arguably the finest ball-striker in the world.

Wataru Endo (Japan, CM, £16.2 million)

Klopp and the Reds wanted Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo late in the 2023 window but settled for Endo, an experienced player. He was a part-time starter under Klopp but has settled into a role as a game-sealer under Slot.

Ryan Gravenberch (Netherlands, CM, £34.2 million)

Klopp's last signing was a player he didn't seem to want. Gravenberch seemed to be far down the German's midfield pecking order before emerging as one of the Premier League's best holding midfielders under Slot.
