Ally McCoist has shared his thoughts on Arsenal's chances of clinching the Premier League title. Despite backing Liverpool to retain their crown, McCoist believes that Arsenal could pose a serious challenge.
This past Saturday saw Arsenal face off against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners secured a 3-0 victory, with Martin Zubimendi netting two goals and summer signing Viktor Gyokeres adding another.
The win over Forest propelled Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table, surpassing Liverpool ahead of the rest of the weekend's matches. Liverpool will be looking to reclaim top spot when they take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.
McCoist was part of the TNT Sports team covering Arsenal's match against Forest. After the final whistle, he offered his perspective on this season's title race.
"I've got Liverpool to win the league. However, after watching them play at Liverpool, I think Arsenal will go really close," McCoist commented on TNT Sports.
Arsenal's next fixture will see them go head-to-head with fellow title contender Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will host Everton in the Merseyside derby as the title race continues in the early stages of the 2025/2026 season.
Despite a triumphant win against Forest, Arsenal may have suffered a significant setback. Club captain Martin Odegaard was forced to leave the pitch early in the first half due to an injury, and it remains uncertain how long the Norwegian international will be out of action.
Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta said: "I think it's the same shoulder that he [injured] last time. He was uncomfortable to continue.
"So, that's a shame. He played with the national team, he was feeling good, and suddenly something happened again."
Before its Premier League clash with Man City next weekend, Arsenal will face Athletic Club midweek in its opening Champions League match of the season.
Asked if Odegaard could feature in midweek, Arteta added: "He will certainly be doing everything from now on to be ready for today. I guarantee you that, but I don't know."
