Ally McCoist received telling phone call after Steven Gerrard turned down job

2 hours ago 2

Ally McCoist has confessed that one of his mates from Rangers stated the team is "still spoiling my Saturday" even without playing, following the unsuccessful attempt to re-appoint Steven Gerrard after talks about his return didn't reach a positive outcome.

This leaves the Scottish team still in search of a manager after dismissing Russell Martin, who was only appointed in the summer. Rangers has managed to secure victory in just one of its seven league matches and has suffered several humiliating performances on the European stage.

Gerrard was quickly pinpointed as Rangers' ideal candidate to take the reins at Ibrox, and discussions were conducted in London regarding a comeback for the Liverpool legend.

He remains the sole individual to clinch the Scottish title for Rangers in the past decade, but ultimately decided the timing wasn't right.

This means that Rangers is back to square one in its quest for a new manager. McCoist, an Ibrox legend and former manager, admits his friends are being unsettled by the troubled club even when the team is not playing.

Speaking to talkSPORT presenter Jeff Stelling, he said: "Do you know something? My mate phoned me on Saturday and he said, 'Rangers aren't even playing and they're still spoiling my Saturday!'

"I think Stevie Gerrard pulled out at about 7 o'clock, out of the manager's race for the position.

"I said I fancied it to be his if he wanted it, and he could get some arrangements and things like that, obviously. He had one or two things to iron out, but sadly, that wasn't the case.

"And that was it, we're still on the hunt. It looks likely to be Danny Rohl, but there's one or two other boys. Michael Carrick's come into the frame. The two of us, we're in a bit of a state, aren't we?"

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl has also caught the eye of Ibrox chiefs throughout the recruitment process and continues to be a contender for the position.

He has been without a club since departing the Owls in July and was approached by Rangers during the summer before they eventually chose to bring in Martin.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe have been conducting discussions with several potential appointees.

However, the board members find themselves facing intense criticism and have acknowledged their poor decision during the summer.

They said in a statement: "We know achieving these goals will take time, but our performances and results have not been good enough. We know you are frustrated - we are too. We did not get this right, and it's our responsibility to fix it and get us back on track."
