Andre Onana enjoyed a moment to forget on his Trabzonspor debut as his new side were beaten 1-0 by Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig.

Onana joined Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United earlier this week and was thrust straight into the team for the game against Fenerbahce, who also had a new goalkeeper with former Manchester City No.1 Ederson now at the Istanbul club following his Etihad exit.

And it was the Brazilian who will have been the happier, celebrating three points and a crucial last minute save to deny what looked like a certain equaliser.

For Onana, it was another difficult day and the 29-year-old could have done better with what proved to be the winner from Youssef En-Nesyri in first half added time.

The Cameroon international parried out a shot from former United midfielder Fred but could not force the ball away from goal and was then slow to get up as the ball was squared for En-Nesyri to bundle home from close range.

Onana was not helped by some hapless defending in the build up to the goal as Trazonspor gave the ball away cheaply and then failed to clear their lines, but it was another moment to forget for the United loanee.

And the error will overshadow what was otherwise a reasonably positive showing from Onana, who made eight saves for ten-man Trabzonspor.

United's decision to allow Onana to leave was influenced by the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, while Old Trafford chief Ruben Amorim felt Onana would benefit from being away from the pressure cooker of the Premier League.

"We saw Andre had a very, very good season in Inter,’ said Amorim.

""The quality is there, but we are in the club sometimes, in the moment, things are getting harder and harder. And you can be really experienced.

"But in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. Sometimes you need a change.

"I think we understood that he needed a change. Sometimes it's hard to point why.

"It's the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, and it was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.

"I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players.

"Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre."
