Liverpool's out-of-contract defender Andy Robertson could contemplate a switch to Celtic should Tottenham suffer relegation this campaign.

That's the view of ex-Scotland international Pat Nevin, who believes alternative destinations beyond London may emerge following the World Cup. Robertson is set to conclude a remarkable nine-year stint with the Reds, during which he's claimed every major trophy available, with reports indicating the 32-year-old has "verbally agreed" to join Tottenham.

Spurs expressed interest in the left-back during January, and Robertson seems receptive to the move, contingent on Tottenham maintaining its Premier League status. With only five games left, Tottenham sits two points adrift of safety, trailing West Ham.

Roberto de Zebri - the club's third manager this term - remains without a victory in his opening two matches at the helm.

Given Tottenham's potential descent, Nevin suggests the Scotland captain might be drawn to his childhood club if an approach materializes - or join Atletico Madrid should the Spanish team revive its interest from last summer.

Speaking to Prime Casino, an online casino with a wide range of slots, like Football Cash Collect Slot, Nevin said: "It's a big step down [the Championship], but not in terms of being too posh to play that low, but the glory that he's had so many times, that's a big call.

"There are very, very few players of that ilk and that standard that, given the opposite, and the fact that we've heard that there's a possibility of staying in the top level in Spain, or staying in top level in Scotland, or staying in the top level somewhere else, it's such a temptation."

Nevertheless, the ex-Chelsea and Everton favorite acknowledged there might be some "joy" to be found in turning out for the floundering English giants in the second division.

He added: "Having said that, if he went to Spurs in the Championship, the hope and likelihood is they'd win the league, or certainly get promoted, which would be a joy in itself.

"And remember, the stadium's great, and it is a phenomenal-sized club, and it might be great to be part of the rebuild, but it's not a selling point, let's be fair.

"The Championship, considering the quality of player he is coming back from the World Cup, I think there might be other options at the top level."

Tottenham was last relegated to the second tier of English soccer in 1977.

Spurs achieved promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt in 1978 before winning back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982.

As for Robertson, he hasn't played in the Championship since the 2015-16 campaign, when he helped Hull win promotion to the Premier League.
