Andy Robertson has been advised to consider a return to Celtic – the club that let him go when he was a teenager.

Robertson is set to become a free agent when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season, nine years on from his arrival from Hull in 2017. Robertson has won all there is to win in English soccer, but – at 31 years old – he still has plenty to offer, and former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson believes a return to Scotland could appeal to the Reds' vice-captain.

“If you asked me and I was Scottish and maybe a bit older than 31, I'd probably go Celtic,” said Johnson. “Win the league and sort of go out like that."

Asked about the prospect of Robertson potentially joining Championship leader Coventry City it Frank Lampard's men go on to achieve promotion, Johnson said: "If I was 27 and you could do Coventry [City] for five years, then you could sort of see the end product for the hard work pay off. Then I'd probably look more interested in that sort of route.

“[But] going back to the Motherland [with Celtic], I'm sure his family will be there, won’t they? So, I'm sure if he could go there and pick up a couple of trophies, that would be high on his to-do list.

"But again, I'm sure if he's available, then there are going to be quite a few options for him, I'd imagine.”

Six clubs are reported to be interested in signing Robertson ahead of the expiry of his contract.

TEAMtalk said last week that Tottenham – which looked at signing him in January – was expected to come back in for him.

Other Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Wolves were also mentioned as interested parties, but Wolves would obviously be a non-starter as a Championship club.

Atletico Madrid, which was linked with Robertson last summer, was said to be an option, while Celtic was said to be the sixth club that is interested in the Scotland skipper.

Again speaking about the possibility of Robertson joining a promoted club, Johnson added: “Whether he has the desire for that kind of challenge is something we'd have to ask him.

"He might want to go and play in the sun somewhere for the last few years instead, but I'd say he can answer that more accurately at the weekend.

"But yes, you can see why a team like Coventry or Wrexham would want him.”
