Andy Robertson has received advice on why a move overseas might benefit him when he eventually departs Liverpool.

The left-back's contract expires at the season's end, and there has been considerable speculation linking him with an exit from Anfield before the January transfer window shuts. Scotland international Robertson has found first-team opportunities limited this campaign after Milos Kerkez's arrival from Bournemouth.

Consequently, Robertson's situation has sparked widespread conjecture, with Tottenham recently showing interest in acquiring Liverpool's vice-captain. The two clubs held talks over a January transfer, but the defender is expected to remain on Merseyside once Monday's deadline has passed.

What lies ahead for Robertson after this campaign remains unclear, with sources at the club emphasising before the latest development regarding Tottenham's pursuit that neither the player nor the club had reached any conclusion.

Amid the continuing conjecture, ex-Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has outlined why a switch abroad could prove the wisest choice for Robertson.

"Andy Robertson's next club will depend on what he wants to do at this stage of his career," Strachan told Poker Scout.

"I believe at his age, he'll get a kick from going abroad and seeing something different, rather than staying in the Premier League and signing for a club like Tottenham.

"When I was Andy's age, I left Manchester United and moved to Leeds, which gave me a real injection of enthusiasm for my football.

"I think that's what Andy wants – to enjoy his football again.

"He's still at a level where he can play for most European clubs, so we'll see who's interested when summer comes round."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed that Robertson will be available for the club's Champions League encounter against Qarabag on Wednesday, and that he anticipates the 31-year-old remaining at the club beyond this transfer window.

"Robbo is part of the team tomorrow evening," Slot said. "And he's been part of this squad, of this club for so many years. And I'm happy to have him.

"It's good that he's available, because that's quite important for us at the moment to have players available.

"It's hard to say anything definitive in this world we are in, but I expect him to stay, yes."
