Angry Marc Guehi plots huge Crystal Palace decision after Liverpool transfer collapse

2 days ago 6

Marc Guehi is reportedly considering giving up the Crystal Palace captaincy due to how he feels about the South London club blocking his deadline day move to Liverpool.

After a lengthy summer saga, it appeared as though Guehi was going to get the move he wanted when Palace accepted a bid from Liverpool in the final few hours of the window.

However, despite having undergone the first part of his Liverpool medical, Palace pulled the plug on the deal after Oliver Glasner apparently threatened to walk away from the club if Guehi was sold without a replacement coming in.

The Guardian says that Guehi has been left angry with Palace's late intervention, and could give up the armband in protest against his current club.

There is no suggestion that Guehi will refuse to play for Palace, but his frustration is understandable given how his deadline day panned out. It is claimed that Guehi is expected to release a statement on the failed move soon.

Palace boss Glasner had made no secret of his desire to keep Guehi in recent weeks. Speaking after Palace's 3-0 win away to Aston Villa

Speaking after Palace's 3-0 win against Aston Villa on Sunday, in which Guehi scored, Glasner said: "I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.

"We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.

"We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players - he is our captain."

As things stand, Guehi will be allowed to leave Palace for free when his contract expires next summer, but Liverpool will not have the free run at him that the Reds seemingly had this summer.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all said to be keen on the England international, whose stock has risen dramatically over the last 18 months.

Guehi played an important role in England reaching the final of Euro 2024 last summer, before captaining Palace to the first major trophy in its history last season as the Eagles beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
