Anthony Gordon breaks silence on Alexander Isak transfer after almost joining Liverpool

15 hours ago 42

Anthony Gordon has said he can relate with Alexander Isak’s transfer saga this summer, 12 months on from his own near move to Liverpool.

The Newcastle United striker is currently missing from the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and has reportedly told staff he wishes to leave this window. Speculation has increased about a summer switch to Liverpool, despite the Premier League champions sanctioning a move for Hugo Ekitike.

It comes a year on from Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign Gordon. The winger was nearly sold to his boyhood club amid Newcastle’s desperate attempts to comply with PSR, which it eventually did through the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Gordon, who was on duty at Euro 2024 at the time, ended up staying at St James’ Park, but can appreciates why the uncertainty affects players.

“I understand what Alex is going through,” the former Everton attacker told the Daily Mail. "What I can say, for me, is that it’s been an absolute pleasure to be out of the transfer speculation for a summer.

“It’s the first time in about three years. It’s been so easy, so mentally refreshing”

Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United (10) arrives for the Premier League match between Newcastle United FC and Manchester United FC at St James' Park on April 13, 2025 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Gordon could have signed for Liverpool last summer

Gordon admitted he thought his time at Newcastle was over last year, and then had to adjust to reality that he was set to stay in the north-east. But the rumors and whispers certainly impacted the 24-year-old.

“It’s true, that was the case,” he explained. “I would never lie. It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally.

“I was there, I wasn’t playing. Then I had the transfer stuff. With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window. It didn’t happen.

Isak's future remains uncertain

“I had to get my head around that to begin with, and then to get my head around it again [when it didn’t happen] was hard.

“I’m a human being. It’s really difficult. That is why I understand what Alex is going through. I feel for him. He will be going through a lot.

“The club is going through a lot. I hope everyone gets what they want in the end.”

It comes amid reports from The Athletic that Liverpool has made a first official bid for the Sweden star on Friday.

The report adds that bid was rejected and Newcastle has offered Isak a contract extension with a release clause next summer.
