Anthony Gordon is back in the headlines as another Newcastle star looks to secure an exit, with Liverpool once again being touted as a potential suitor.

The winger is said to be keen to explore his options this summer as he looks to follow in Alexander Isak’s lead by leaving St. James' Park. Newcastle is bracing itself, with a number of its big names being linked with transfers this summer as the club looks set to miss out on European football next season.

Liverpool is among the clubs linked with Gordon, with the Reds already having a history with the former Everton winger.

According to The Telegraph, Gordon was “desperate” to join Liverpool when the opportunity arose two years ago.

At the time, the Reds were going through a transitional period as Arne Slot came in to replace Jurgen Klopp, with Richard Hughes overseeing his first transfer window as the club’s new sporting director.

Gordon had looked as though he could become the club’s first major signing of the new era, with a deal having been explored as Newcastle looked to raise funds amid its concerns over the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Talks collapsed though after the Magpies wanted to include Jarell Quansah as part of the deal, with Liverpool unwilling to let the young defender leave Anfield at the time. Quansah would subsequently go on to move to Bayer Leverkusen a year later.

The opportunity may arise to sign Gordon again though, with The Telegraph suggesting that he would “jump at the chance to return to Merseyside,” having been a boyhood Liverpool fan and played for the club’s academy before joining Everton.

With Hugo Ekitike facing a long injury lay-off, potentially ruling him out for the start of next season, Liverpool may find itself in the market for a new forward this summer.

A winger already looked to be high on the list of priorities after Mohamed Salah announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Should the Reds rekindle their interest, they likely wouldn’t be alone in targeting Gordon. Bayern Munich is credited with an interest, while Arsenal is also claimed to have a long-standing admiration for the England international, who is expected to be involved at this year’s World Cup, which could complicate matters further.

An asking price in excess of £80 million ($109M) is said to be likely, with Newcastle reportedly scoffing at recent reports in Germany suggesting that it would entertain bids of around £60M ($81M).

Gordon is under contract at Newcastle until 2030, and there is no hint of a falling-out behind the scenes at St. James' Park, suggesting we won't see similar circumstances to Isak's departure for Liverpool last summer.
