Arne Slot and Jamie Carragher disagree on Liverpool's main title challenger

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal will be Liverpool's main challenger for Premier League supremacy this season.

The Gunners have finished second in each of the last three campaigns, with Manchester City pipping Mikel Arteta's men to the crown twice before Liverpool cantered to the title last term.

Liverpool kicked off the campaign with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday, before City cruised past Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

Arsenal does not begin its campaign until Sunday, when the North London club takes on Manchester United, and Carragher is backing the Gunners to have another good season.

"I'd probably say Arsenal [will be Liverpool's closest challenger], but I've just got Pep Guardiola in the back of my mind," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"He just doesn't not win. I don't think he's gone two years without winning a league title, but is the City squad good enough to win the league? We expected him to fix it [during] last season, but he couldn't do that. I'd probably just edge for Arsenal."

Slot, meanwhile, expects Chelsea to be in the mix — although he did not predict whether the Stamford Bridge club would pose a bigger challenge than the likes of Arsenal and City.

"I expected them to win last season already," Slot said. "The amount of quality they have and they were there at the start of the season. They were in [the title race] after ten games. They were still there [in December].

“Squad depth, quality, they have a very good manager as well, and I think they've shown this by winning the trophies they won last season.

“It was good for us that they also had a period last season where they struggled and that's why they couldn't compete till the end for the league title.

“But now they're strengthening the team again, so a team that's, in my opinion, one of the ones that are going to challenge for a league title.”
