Arne Slot calls for Liverpool to fix one recurring problem with Arsenal reminder

Arne Slot has called for Liverpool to build on the momentum of the midweek win over Inter Milan when it hosts Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The Reds have endured an inconsistent campaign, a fact underlined by the current 10th-place standing in the Premier League table. But there have been some impressive performances at times, most notably with wins over Arsenal, Aston Villa and Real Madrid.

Liverpool has failed to build on those results and sustain a winning run in recent weeks. However, the Reds are currently enjoying their longest unbeaten run since September, and while not impressing across all four of those matches, Slot is hoping the Inter win can represent a turning point in the season.

“We now have two wins and two draws from our last four games, which is not the standard we aspire to but it is a sequence of results which give us a platform to build from,” the Dutchman wrote in Saturday’s matchday program ahead of the Brighton clash.

“We know also that had we managed certain moments better our points return could – and almost certainly should – have been better. This is where we need to improve.

“We need to show more consistency from one game to the next and we need to manage key moments better.

Slot has been frustrated by Liverpool's lack of consistency

“At times this season we have shown our quality and our potential – beating Real and Atletico Madrid, defeating Arsenal and Aston Villa are among the first to spring to mind – but our aim has to be to win more regularly.”

A win for Liverpool would see the champions overtake Brighton in the table and, depending on results elsewhere, the Reds could end the weekend in sixth place.

Climbing up the division’s standings is key for a Liverpool head coach who has emerged from the Mohamed Salah debacle in a stronger position.

“We want and need to improve our position in the Premier League,” wrote Slot. “I would be the first to admit that 10th place is not good enough for a club like Liverpool.

"Yes, the league is even more competitive than ever this season and a lot of teams are close in terms of points, but this does not justify where we are right now. We have to take responsibility for changing this.

“This is why I was so pleased with how we performed at San Siro, because everyone involved on and off the pitch took responsibility for helping Liverpool show a better face.”
