Arne Slot criticism is unfair - Jurgen Klopp did the exact same after winning the league

1 day ago 27

Football fans have notoriously short memories, and we're seeing the latest example of that right now amid Arne Slot's struggles during his second season in charge of Liverpool.

The Reds have lost six of their last seven games, and social media is awash with supporters calling for the Dutchman to be fired. Thankfully, the views of social media commentators often do not represent the views of the masses, and Slot continues to be backed by most match-going fans.

Against Aston Villa on Saturday, the Dutchman and his players will receive the backing of those inside Anfield again, but there is only so long that Liverpool can continue to lose before the tide turns.

The writing is usually on the wall for a manager when home supporters start to make their discontent clear, and it will be interesting to see what happens should Liverpool lose to Aston Villa this weekend.

Aston Villa, which is the visitor, is the most in-form team in the league over the last five games, so a win would be the perfect tonic for Slot.

If Liverpool doesn't win, though, and Villa emerges with all three points to condemn the Reds to a fifth defeat in six league games, it will still not represent Liverpool's worst Premier League run this decade.

That's because Jurgen Klopp presided over an even worse run during the 2020-21 season, when his team was also the defending champion.

Between February and March 2021, Liverpool lost six out of seven league games, with five of those losses coming at Anfield, during a season which took place behind closed doors during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Liverpool's squad back then was perhaps not as strong as it is now, but there were not many calls for Jurgen Klopp to lose his job as there are for Slot at the moment.

The Reds went on to finish third that season, with 69 points, having lost nine league games over the course of the season; eight of those losses came in the span of 12 games across January, February and March.

Of course, Klopp had built up far more credit at Liverpool than Slot has, but the Dutchman has earned the right to continue for a good while yet courtesy of his title-winning exploits last term.
