Arne Slot issues clear response to Liverpool transfer question as injury problems mount

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says buying players in January is not something he is currently thinking about, with the Reds having several important matches to play before then.

Ahead of this weekend's resumption of Premier League action, Slot was asked about links with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has also been put forward as a potential option in some quarters.

"This was one of the questions I didn't expect, talking about signings in the winter break," Slot said. "There are so many games to be played before that and then the position we are in, it's the last thing that is on my mind.

"Maybe not on Richard's [Hughes]. But it's not a topic for me at all at the moment. We have at the moment of time three center-backs with Joe Gomez included.

"Maybe Ryan [Gravenberch] and Wata [Endo] who can play there. We have other positions there which are bit more of an issue."

The other areas of the field that Slot was referring to include right-back. Jeremie Frimpong is still a few weeks away from a return, while Conor Bradley has a muscle issue.

That will mean Gomez having to play at full-back, in all likelihood, though he won't be able to play every minute of every game.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones have both played there before, while Endo could be another option. With two games per week coming up, there will need to be rotation.

"The only focus we have at this moment in time is winning games of football, which is the same as this moment last season," Slot added.

After taking on Nottingham Forest, Liverpool faces PSV in the Champions League midweek.

It then travels to West Ham United next weekend, with a more favorable run of fixtures coming up, at least on paper, than has been the case for the last few weeks.

On getting back into the Premier League title race, Slot said: "The best way to judge a league table in 38 games and the next best after 19 games. Let's see where we are then."

Liverpool.com says: Losing Bradley is a huge blow and Florian Wirtz is set to be missing too. Though Alisson Becker will be returning, losing others means Slot has some more dilemmas to solve.
