Arne Slot issues Hugo Ekitike injury update as Liverpool striker forced off vs PSV

Arne Slot confirmed a back problem forced Hugo Ekitike off as Liverpool's season hit a new low against PSV in the Champions League.

Liverpool was beaten 4-1 by the Dutch side at Anfield with the defeat coming just days after the 3-0 setback to Nottingham Forest. Ekitike was restored to the starting line up for the game but was withdrawn in the second half and replaced by Alexander Isak.

Speaking after the game, Slot said: "I constantly felt [in the second half] what’s wrong with Hugo, it felt like he couldn’t move like he did in the first half. That’s why our press was a bit off. He just told me in the first 5-10 mins of the first half he felt his back too much and that’s why he had to go out.”

It was another night of disappointment for Liverpool, who fell behind early on to an Ivan Perisic penalty, before Dominik Szoboszlai leveled the scores at the break.

But the second period saw defensive issues cost the home side dear with Milos Kerkez and Ibrahima Konate both at fault as the visitors ran riot to claim a famous victory.

"The emotions are very negative and disappointing. After going 2-1 behind we had a number of good chances to equalize. It is hard to take," Slot added.

"We have to face where we are and fight really hard."
