Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has shared his thoughts on the club’s summer transfer window so far, as preparations continue for the new Premier League season.
The Reds have welcomed five new additions so far in a major revamp of the first team squad. There has been defensive reinforcements with Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez while also signing Freddie Woodman on a free transfer.
The Reds also made a record signing in Florian Wirtz with the latest addition Hugo Ekitike joining up with the squad in Hong Kong. Giorgi Mamardashvili also joined the Reds after signing a deal last summer.
Speaking after the 4-2 defeat to AC Milan, Slot praised the ambition of the club’s recruitment strategy and highlighted the positive integration of the new arrivals.
The Dutchman said: "I think what I’ve also said is I’m really happy with the squad we had. That’s what we also showed by not bringing in new players last season.
"Now we won the league, but you can see everywhere around us – in the Premier League, but also we play in Europe, so we want to achieve things there as well – that all of these teams try to strengthen their squads.
"So, if you do the same as we did last year, we will probably not be able to win it again.
"So, we have to improve; the players that are still here, and we’ve tried to bring new energy in, but also ‘weapons’, as you called it, and I think the players we’ve brought in have shown already in the few times we have trained together and the games we’ve played.
"Now let’s wait how Hugo [Ekitike] is going to do that. Really pleased what we did until now, but already really pleased we kept the players that had an extended contract last season."
While Liverpool has already been active in the transfer market this summer, the club continues to monitor Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward is highly regarded at Anfield as a potential long-term solution in attack.
Should Luis Diaz depart before the window closes, with reported interest from Bayern Munich, the urgency to reinforce the front line could grow significantly.
Isak’s pace, technical ability, and proven Premier League pedigree make him a standout candidate if Liverpool decides to make another major move. Ahead of facing Arsenal tomorrow, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was asked about Isak's situation.
"Of course, there are things going on behind the scenes," he admitted, via the Daily Mail's Craig Hope.
"Conversations that happen between Alex and myself, and Alex and the club will stay private. Whatever happens has to be for the best of the club. There are no contract talks taking place. That will be for a later date, potentially.
"I certainly hope he stays. It's football, who knows what the future may bring."
