Arne Slot press conference

Arne Slot launched an impassioned defense of Liverpool's summer spending, reminding any critics that the Reds also banked significant funds from their transfer business.

The signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, both of whom were in excess of £100million, has gained obvious interest, especially given FSG's usual frugal track record.

But Liverpool also banked around £262million from sales of players such as Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah. Slot has clearly been irked with the media talk of Liverpool's spending, as he referenced in Tuesday's pre-match press conference.

"There is so much focus on our new signings, especially from pundits that favour some other clubs in the country that cannot stop talking about £450million - I repeat, £450million, £450million!

"But they forget about the £300m that we have sold for. These players we have brought in together with players that are worth the same amount of money. So, yes, if we want to strength the squad we need to spend that much money.

"If we sell Dominik Szoboszlai tomorrow he would be worth that money as well. There is so much focus on Florian, nut the ones that have stayed behind as part of a team haven’t scored four goals or 12 assists as well.

"He is part for team that is top of the league, that won against Newcastle and Arsenal, where the team of last season didn’t win. It is the way you want to look at it.

"Yes, he hasn’t scored four goals and got 12 assists in the first four games but for me that is down to the quality that we faced. He is part of a team that is no.1 in the league at the moment."

The Reds begin their 2025/26 Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a home encounter against Atletico Madrid.

Slot is hoping the side can improve on last season's last-16 exit at the hands of eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
