Former Everton captain Phil Jagielka believes Arne Slot is within his rights to ask Liverpool for one more season with a few signings to turn things around after their disastrous campaign.

After winning the Premier League trophy in his first year, Slot's second season has been a nightmare year — looking like the Reds may finish outside of the top five while being eliminated from the FA and League Cup. Liverpool has lost 15 matches in all competitions this season — the most since the year that ultimately saw Brendan Rodgers fired.

Rumors have continued to swirl on Slot's future, with Xabi Alonso seen as a potential replacement, even though Steven Gerrard insinuates he wants to see the Dutchman stay in charge while being a big fan of his.

Jagielka has stated that Slot should speak to the club's owners directly and be forward with what he needs to turn things around so that he can save his role.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club this week, Jagielka said: “If Arne Slot walked in there and said: 'Give me next season' he says give me a centre-half or two, give me a strike force that is fit and you will see a different team.

"Whether that will make a difference or not, but I think that is what he will argue. They should have got a centre-half in the summer and didn't. They have not had Isak. Okay, he wasn't playing great before he got injured but they have not had him.

"Obviously, we know the news that Salah won't be there next season so that could be a slightly different formation or maybe a bit of a less of a headache of how to play him.

"I think if you are Arne Slot and are going in the speak to your board, that is how you sell, I won't say the dream, but you say sign me three players, a couple of defenders and maybe another forward option and he'd probably back himself.

“He might class himself as being a bit unlucky or naive not getting another defender but they are two positions where they have struggled."

Liverpool will come up against PSG in the Champions League, in two games that may be enough for owners at Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to make their decision moving forward.

Gerrard stated this week: "I think it's key [to qualify for the Champions League]. I think the Fulham game [in the league this weekend] is just as important [as the upcoming PSG games].

"If the ownership and the people above see that gap to Villa and United stretches or gets any worse, I worry for the manager's position. I don't want that to happen — I'm a huge fan of Arne Slot.

"I was blown away by his first season, I must say. He's a good man. He's obviously a very, very good coach, the job he's done.
