Arne Slot unveils new Liverpool formation with bold tactical switch

1 day ago 25

Arne Slot opted to experiment with a new tactical system in the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

The Dutchman has mainly been wedded to a 4-2-3-1 shape since his arrival at Anfield last year, but chose to deploy a 3-4-3 formation in the fourth-round encounter.

Slot made 10 changes for the Palace game, with Milos Kerkez the only player to retain his place from the weekend defeat against Brentford.

Freddie Woodman was chosen as goalkeeper, as the 28-year-old made his Liverpool debut behind a back three of Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo and Andy Robertson.

Calvin Ramsay returned to the Liverpool team for the first time since 2022, and both he and Milos Kerkez lined up as wing-backs.

Alexis Mac Allister also made a rare start as he looks to regain fitness, and partnered Trey Nyoni in a two-man midfield.

In the attacking areas, Kieran Morrison and Rio Ngumoha played in the wide positions, with Federico Chiesa operating as a center-forward.

It was an intriguing decision for Slot, who has changed shape for the second midweek game in a row. The Liverpool head coach also changed from his preferred system last week in the Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Reds operating in a fluid 4-4-2 shape.
