The last few weeks have been bruising for Liverpool, with the Reds have suffering four consecutive Premier League defeats and falling to seventh in the table.
But Liverpool’s pain has very much been Arsenal’s gain, and Mikel Arteta’s side has recorded four wins on the bounce. That has seen the Gunners go from five points behind Liverpool to now seven clear of the champions.
Arsenal holds a four-point gap over the team in second place - which, incredibly, is Bournemouth. Most have the North London club as heavy favorites to win the league this season, taking its tally of titles to four in the Premier League era.
Liverpool fans may not like to admit it, but despite the highs at Anfield in the last decade, Arsenal has been the more successful club throughout the Premier League’s existence.
That is borne out by an intriguing stat that surfaced after last weekend, as Arsenal recorded its 700th Premier League win. Only Manchester United (760) has more in that time.
Liverpool sits third on the list with 682 and will hope to reach the 700-mark by the end of the season.
However, for that to happen, Arne Slot will need to see a massive upturn in results and performances.
The Liverpool head coach has faced a backlash in recent days due to the club’s current form. Ex-coach Sammy Lee claimed the team lacks the “basic principles of football,” while Tony Pulis said Slot has upset the team’s balance.
“Now you've brought different people in, and you think you've sent it forward, just to make an example of itm” said the ex-Stoke City boss.
“Are you going to play someone, or not play someone, you've just spent over a hundred million on and is on an absolute fortune?
“Sometimes you think you’ve got to fit them in. And by fitting them in, you lose complete control of the balance of the team that made you so successful the year before.”
Liverpool will hope to return to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday when it hosts Aston Villa.
By then, the Reds could be 10 points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
"I am looking at Arsenal right now, and they look by far the best team in the country right now,” said Jamie Carragher after last weekend’s results.
"It's very early days, of course it is, but they need to capitalize on the situation they find themselves in because they could get a sizeable lead in these early stages."
