Arsenal overtook Liverpool to claim top spot in the Premier League following their win over West Ham United. Liverpool were unable to reclaim first place as they were defeated in dramatic fashion by Chelsea.
Last season's top two sides look set to be among the contenders for the title once again, but the momentum has shifted. The Gunners have won their last two league games against opposition who have proven difficult in recent years, while Liverpool have lost their last two.
"I told them it was a big opportunity, we’ve had very difficult fixtures since the start of the season, and some very bad injuries as well not helping," said Arteta after claiming three points. "Still, the team is performing, playing well, winning today with absolute dominance and without conceding a goal. So, good to get to the international break in this spirit."
The Spanish coach and Arne Slot may be thankful for the international break to have arrived, as the most recent round of fixtures saw them hit by injuies. The Gunners saw two fresh problems crop up against the Irons.
Martin Odegaard left the pitch in the first half following a knee injury. The Norway international was due to fly to his home nation on Saturday evening but remained in London for further assessment.
The journey was postponed as Odegaard's knee is currently in a brace and there are fears he may potentially have suffered damage.
Declan Rice also suffered an issue in the game. The England star will also need to be assessed. "Well, he's not alright because he asked me to come off, so that's a shame," Arteta said in his press conference.
"So, he had pain in his back and he could not carry on, which is something very unusual for Declan, so we'll have to assess him and see how he is."
There were fresh injury concerns for Liverpool too as Ibrahima Konate was substituted at Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman was replaced by Curtis Jones just 10 minutes into the second half.
"I don't know if it's a big injury, but I do know that he limped," said Slot. "And I asked him, and he said: 'I feel my quad a little bit'.
"But for me all alarm bells go off because in another sprint then you never know if that is going to go good, so it was already a substitution I had in mind for maybe a little bit later, because the right centre-back has a lot of ball possession, and we all know that Ryan (Gravenberch) is good in there.
"So it might be okay and he went off early enough, but it was clear that I had to take him off because he was limping."
Andy Robertson also sparked some concerns when he was spotted limping off the pitch after the final whistle. The Scotland international was assisted by a member of backroom staff as he made his way down the tunnel.
Arsenal injury list: Martin Odegaard (knee), Declan Rice (back), Noni Madueke (knee), Gabriel Jesus (knee), Kai Havertz (knee), Piero Hincapie (groin).
Liverpool injury list: Ibrahima Konate (quad), Andrew Robertson (unknown), Giovanni Leoni (knee), Alisson Becker (thigh).
