Arsenal can hand Mikel Arteta huge boost with transfer windfall thanks to clever double clause

Arsenal could benefit financially from the potential January transfers of two former players

Arsenal could benefit financially in January through some shrewd sell-on clauses included in previous transfer agreements.

Serie A players Nuno Tavares and Brooke Norton-Cuffy - both ex-Gunners - could be set for moves this month, with any transfers proving lucrative for their former club. Currently, Tavares has caught the eye of Besiktas, who would need to fork out £13million.

Meanwhile, Norton-Cuffy is attracting attention from several clubs including Newcastle, Everton, Juventus, West Ham and Napoli. Current club Genoa have set a price tag of £17.5m for the defender.

Tavares, who now plies his trade as a left-back for Lazio, arrived from Benfica in July 2021 and featured 28 times in north London. He found the net once before going on loan to Marseille and Nottingham Forest.

He left the Emirates Stadium in 2024 on loan to Italian side Lazio. This arrangement was made permanent last summer for around £7.85m, with Arsenal reportedly securing a 35% sell-on clause.

Should the £13m asking price be met, Mikel Arteta would receive up to £4.5m to bolster his first-team squad budget. On the other hand, Norton-Cuffy progressed through Arsenal's renowned Hale End academy, putting pen to paper on his first professional deal in 2021.

The defender featured solely for the U18 and U21 sides, failing to make a senior appearance for Arsenal before his departure just three years on. The U21 European Championship victor departed north London in 2024 to join Genoa in a deal valued at an initial £1.75m, with the same amount up for grabs in bonuses.

Luckily for Arsenal, they included a sell-on clause that will see them earn a portion of any future transfer fee. GiveMeSport reports that three Premier League outfits are keen on snapping up the 22-year-old, with Newcastle particularly eager to boost their defensive options.

Everton are also in the mix as they eye a long-term successor for seasoned defender Seamus Coleman, who recently made his return to the squad following a hamstring injury. The report suggests Norton-Cuffy harbours ambitions of playing in the Premier League, while Italian giants Juventus and Napoli have also expressed interest in the young full-back.

While Arsenal have yet to make their mark in the current transfer window, Arteta could be considering how potential sales of former players will boost his transfer war chest.
