Arsenal have yet to sign any players in the January transfer window but a serious injury could force the Gunners into late action

Arsenal have yet to secure any new additions in the January transfer window as the deadline approaches. But an unexpected injury could prompt the Gunners into action.

Mikel Arteta's squad have mounted an impressive challenge for the top-flight this season after years of playing second fiddle. Their campaign has been strengthened by a £250million summer spending spree that brought in the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze.

This investment has meant that, similar to 12 months ago, the club have remained inactive in the transfer market. Currently the only business sanctioned has been departures, with Ethan Nwaneri and Oleksandr Zinchenko securing new clubs alongside several academy prospects.

However, an injury to a key first-team player could trigger a dramatic eleventh-hour signing and a prominent figure could bid farewell to the Emirates. football.london brings you three transfers that could still materialise before the deadline.

Deals completed

Arsenal's main priority this window has been to balance their finances and enable some young talents to gain additional playing time elsewhere. The most significant amongst a selection of youngsters who have departed on loan is Nwaneri.

The Gunners' youngest-ever Premier League participant has moved to Marseille until the season's conclusion and the French club do not possess a purchase option. He found the net on his debut in a victory against title contenders Lens.

Zinchenko's departure has been the sole other noteworthy transaction. He spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest this season but struggled for regular game time, leading to an early termination of that arrangement before securing a permanent switch to Ajax.

Sandro Tonali signed

Following Mikel Merino's severe injury speculation began circulating early on deadline day that Arsenal might seek a replacement for their title push.

Newcastle's Sandro Tonali emerged as an unexpected candidate mentioned by Sky Sports, who reported that the club harbour genuine interest in the Italian and are pursuing a challenging late agreement.

Whilst this transfer appears unlikely, with Newcastle apparently turning down their opening approach and limited time remaining in the window, should the Gunners believe another midfielder could assist them in securing the league crown they may attempt to complete the deal.

Ruben Neves signed

On comparable reasoning to Tonali, if Arsenal fear that lacking a player of Merino's calibre to anchor their midfield might compromise their title bid then an alternative could be pursued in Ruben Neves.

The ex-Wolves midfielder has allegedly been monitored by several elite clubs for considerable time, with his current contract at Al-Hilal due to expire this summer. Arsenal were purportedly among those clubs previously showing interest.

Other reports indicate that the 28-year-old will shortly sign a fresh contract to remain in the Saudi Pro League, but should the Gunners determine that a new midfielder is essential they could attempt to lure him to the Emirates.

Leandro Trossard sold

Whilst it seems unlikely that Arsenal would sanction any departures of first-team players on deadline day without securing a replacement, Leandro Trossard could be one who says goodbye. The Belgian represents a vital component of Arteta's first-team rotation but his existing contract runs out in the summer.

The club does possess the option to extend it by a further year, but speculation regarding an approach from Saudi Arabia has circulated over the past 12 months.

Should the Gunners wish to capitalise on Trossard and believe they have sufficient depth in attack, then they could accept a sizeable bid from the Middle East in the improbable scenario it arrives.
