Arsenal exploit Chelsea manager decision to hijack transfer years in the making

Arsenal and Chelsea are both reportedly showing an interest in signing Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet as the January transfer window rolls on.

Arsenal and Chelsea might be about to go head-to-head in the transfer market for one of Europe's most highly-rated defenders. The January transfer window is open, which gives the Gunners and the Blues an opportunity to strengthen their squad.

The New Year has already brought about change at Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca leaving Stamford Bridge earlier this month after the Blues parted company with their now-former head coach.

Liam Rosenior, who will take official charge this weekend for the FA Cup third-round tie against Charlton Athletic, has been appointed as Maresca's successor.

Although Chelsea are dealing with a managerial change, the transfer window remains ongoing and a new report has claimed the Blues are now facing competition from Arsenal for a long-standing target.

It has been reported by TEAM Talk that Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is still in-demand for Chelsea, but that a host of other clubs, including Arsenal, are now in the running to sign the player, as well.

As well as the Gunners, and the Blues, it's been claimed that Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid have now also joined the race to sign Jacquet this month.

Chelsea are reported to have held an interest in signing Jacquet during Maresca's time as the club's manager, with the Blues' scouting team said to have been monitoring the 20-year-old throughout the season.

Arsenal strengthened their centre-back options during the summer with the arrivals of Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera, but have been forced to deal with injury concerns in their defence throughout the campaign.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will continue to have an interest in Jacquet this month, with Rosenior outlining his plans to work with the current group of players at Stamford Bridge.

"I'm extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed as the head coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies," Rosenior said in his statement after being confirmed as the Blues' new boss.

"My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies.

"To be entrusted with this role means the world to me and I want to thank all involved for the opportunity and faith in undertaking this job. I'll give everything to bring the success this club deserves.

"I believe deeply in teamwork, unity, togetherness and working for one another, and those values will be at the heart of everything we do. They will be the foundation of our success. I'm excited to work with a extremely talented group of players and staff, to build strong connections on and off the pitch, and to create an environment where everyone feels united and driven by the same goal."
