Arsenal given fresh injury headache in nightmare 12-player injury list for Mikel Arteta

Arsenal could be without some big names when they return to action this weekend, with several players requiring medical assessment.

Mikel Arteta faces quite the conundrum ahead of Arsenal's clash against Southampton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The Gunners appear to have been hit by a wave of injuries and could be without some big names when they face Tonda Eckert's side at St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday evening.

Arteta may be left no choice but to make wholesale changes to his starting lineup after several players withdrew from international duty. Eberechi Eze was the first to drop out, with Martin Zubimendi being the latest to follow suit.

As many as 10 players have flocked to the Sobha Realty Centre in recent days to join Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard in the treatment room. With the end-of-season run-in just days away, Arteta will hope the medical staff can work their magic.

Eberechi Eze

Eberechi Eze suffered a calf injury during Arsenal's win over Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the Champions League last-16. The Gunners midfielder missed the Carabao Cup final as a result and withdrew from the England squad shortly after the game.

Gabriel Magalhaes

Gabriel withdrew from the Brazil squad at the start of the international break after feeling 'pain in his right knee'. The Arsenal defender had played the entirety of the Carabao Cup final shortly before the Brazilian Football Confederation issued a statement.

William Saliba

Like Gabriel, Saliba had also played the entirety of the Carabao Cup final before dropping out of the France squad. The French Football Federation confirmed that the Arsenal defender was suffering from a 'recurring pain in his left ankle', which 'requires treatment and a minimum rest period of ten days'.

Leandro Trossard

Trossard pulled out of the Belgium squad at the start of the international break due to a hip injury. The Belgian FA claimed his omission will allow him to continue his rehabilitation under 'optimal conditions'.

Noni Madueke

Madueke suffered a knee injury during the first half of England's friendly against Uruguay. The Arsenal winger was forced to come off and was later spotted walking through the mixed zone with a brace on his left leg.

Declan Rice

Despite arriving late, like many others, Rice left the England camp just a day after joining Thomas Tuchel's squad. The Arsenal midfielder trained before returning to the Sobha Realty Training Centre for 'medical assessment'.

Bukayo Saka

Saka also dropped out of the England squad just a day after arriving. He also required 'medical assessment', according to a statement by the FA.

Piero Hincapie

Hincapie withdrew from international duty following Ecuador's clash against Morocco. Despite requesting to be substituted, the Arsenal defender jogged off the field when he was later replaced by Pervis Estupiñán in the final quarter of an hour or so.

As it stands, the extent of his injury remains unclear.

Martin Zubimendi

Zubimendi withdrew from the Spain squad over the weekend due to 'discomfort in his right knee'. In an official statement, the Spanish FA announced that they want to 'avoid any risk and protect the player's health'.

Jurrien Timber

Timber suffered a knock during Arsenal's win over Everton earlier this month and has been absent ever since. Despite the injury, the Gunners defender was still named in the Netherlands squad; he eventually pulled out, having 'not yet sufficiently recovered', according to the Dutch FA.

Martin Odegaard

Odegaard suffered a knee injury during the North London Derby last month. Speaking to Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, the Norway boss provided an update on the Arsenal midfielder.

"I haven’t talked to him," said Stale Solbakken. "But we have texted a bit. The most important thing is that he is making progress."

When asked when Odegaard could return to action, he replied: "When he will be ready, I don’t know. But it is good progress."

Mikel Merino

Merino underwent surgery on a foot injury at the end of January. The Arsenal midfielder was spotted wearing a protective boot and using a crutch shortly before the international break.
