Arsenal handed unseen Premier League title race boost after Chelsea fall apart

Arsenal remain top of the league but are locked in a tight battle against Manchester City and wil hope for any advantage they can muster in the final month of the season

Chelsea's defeat to Brighton gave Arsenal more than one reason to smile on Tuesday evening. While the Gunners' faithful may have taken a hint of pleasure in seeing their rivals struggle, it could also have offered a boost in their hopes of securing a Premier League title.

Manchester City can overtake Mikel Arteta and co with a victory over Burnley in their game in hand. It would see Arsenal and City level on points with five matches remaining.

Chelsea's defeat to Brighton has ensured that several teams still have a lot to play for heading into the final weeks of the season. After looking in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League earlier in the season, the Blues are now in seventh place and far from guaranteed a Conference League place.

They sit on 48 points, level with Brentford and Bournemouth below them, just one point clear of Everton and two points clear of Sunderland. That means, rather than facing a group of midtable teams with scant to play for, that City will line up against sides with plenty on the line.

The Citizens' next three Premier League matches after Burnley are against Everton, Brentford and Bournemouth. Brentford are unbeaten in six matches in the division, while the Cherries have not lost in 13 outings since January 3.

A number of figures have offered their doubts on City's ability to earn six wins from their final six matches. Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes they could slip up against Everton.

"This title race is not over yet," he said on Match of the Day. "I still feel like there are some more twists and turns to come.

"It is obviously going to be tight but City have got one more game to try to win, so I still have Arsenal down as slight favourites.

"I’ve been in this situation myself, where you need to win all your games for the title. You look at your games and you think well we should win this one, or that one, but it never pans out that way.

"From now until the end of the season it is just going to be down to which team keeps their composure the best – that’s who will win it."

Ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also backing the Gunners. "I believe that Arsenal will win the league," Wenger said at an Abbey Road Studios fund-raiser for ProjectTwinning.

"I deeply believe. "It looks, to me, like common sense.

"I like Eze, Odegaard, Havertz and Madueke attacking (intent at the Etihad). Manchester City will not make the perfect run-in."
