Arsenal latest: Julian Alvarez casts doubt on future as Mikel Arteta's chat with boss emerges

Arsenal have been linked with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez since he was at Manchester City

Arsenal have been forced to adopt an inventive approach this campaign as they navigate injury problems while remaining competitive at home and in Europe.

Matters could become more straightforward during the summer, however, with Julian Alvarez - a player eyed by the Gunners before he joined current employers Atletico Madrid - refusing to rule out another change of scenery. It appears there will be departures alongside arrivals at the Emirates Stadium in the summer transfer window, irrespective of events between now and May.

Financial Fair Play regulations have impacted clubs all over England and Arsenal may need to sell in order to finance more additions. On the pitch, Mikel Arteta's side and second-placed Manchester City will resume their league campaigns over the weekend after both being busy in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Arteta's squad host Everton while City will also be in the capital as they face West Ham at the London Stadium. Our attention for now centres on the Gunners' transfer strategy as well as Arteta's involvement in Christian Norgaard's changing role in north London. Here's all the latest.

Alvarez not ruling out move

Alvarez has maintained he is content at Atletico Madrid as things stand. Nevertheless, the Argentina forward, who has been mentioned in connection with Barcelona as well as Arsenal, has declined to dismiss a future transfer.

"I don't know, I don't know, but maybe yes, maybe no. You never know," the World Cup winner said. "But I'm very happy here. You ask me a question that will end up all over the place, but I'm happy.

"I'm thinking about the day-to-day, I'm working to improve, to give my best here, I never said anything bad about the club, I'm very grateful, the people also showed me their affection, so I'm very happy."

Alvarez was speaking following Atleti's commanding 5-2 win at home to Tottenham, which left them on the brink of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals. His two goals against Spurs took him up to seven in the Champions League and 16 in all competitions this season.

Norgaard sheds light on Arteta talks

Arsenal have had to contend with several defensive injury setbacks this season. One of the ways they have attempted to shake things up is by pushing midfielder Christian Norgaard into a deeper role.

The Denmark international, who arrived from Brentford during the summer, featured at centre-back against Club Brugge in the Champions League last December. He has expressed his willingness to embrace the new position, to the extent that his national team boss Brian Riemer is considering utilising him there.

"It actually suits me very well," Norgaard told Viaplay. "As a defender, you have a lot of the game in front of you. In the long run, it could be a good and suitable position for me. It's nice to have a phase where I try it out."

He and Arteta have also spoken about the transition with Riemer. "It's always nice when time is set aside for something like this," the 32-year-old said.

"We were just talking about this potential opportunity for me to play centre-back. It was great that Brian could hear what thoughts and challenges Arsenal have had."
