Arsenal are looking to secure the signing of Viktor Gyokeres before the club fly away to Asia for their preseason tour, football.london understands. This is what Mikel Arteta is hoping for, and the reality is that Andrea Berta is about to reignite negotiations with Sporting CP to try and find an agreement.
It has been messy in the case of Gyokeres. Suggestions of former gentleman's agreements that a deal could be struck at a lower fee are being ignored, and Arsenal are even going as far as to offer well over what was thought to be his price initially - but it has not been enough.
It is thought that Sporting CP want a deal worth €70million (£60million) guaranteed plus €10million (£8.6million) in add-ons. Whereas the Gunners are looking to offer €65million (£56million) up front with €15million (£12.9million) in add-ons.
The clubs have agreed, therefore, that it will cost €80million (£69.1million) in total, but so far, both sides have been stubborn about finding that middle ground. With that in mind, it is perhaps time for Arsenal to break just a little and, with the situation as it is, edge closer to what Sporting’s president Frederico Varandas has been after.
Finding that middle points would represent €67.5million (£58.3million) with €12.5million (£10.8million) in add-ons. While many argue Arsenal should just pay what they want, this being Berta’s first summer, it is important he doesn’t cave into the demands of another club.
Especially when what has been offered is, of course, above that previously thought price tag. There will come a natural breaking point, but if Arsenal can throw their hat back in the ring and offer to compromise, it could be the move which finally concludes this saga.
Arsenal want the move. Gyokeres wants the move. We’re getting to the stage where Sporting CP should be wanting this move to then have the most time to reinvest their secured funds ahead of another title charge, which will be without the player who has been the main driving force of their charge.
