Welcome to football.london's live coverage of Arsenal's transfer deadline day. There could be some late drama for the Gunners, who have until 7pm to get any final business over the line.

An injury to Mikel Merino has left the Spaniard out for a significant period as he undergoes surgery, and could yet push Arsenal into the transfer market. The north London side do not want to be left short as they continue a Premier League title push, having extended their lead at the top of the division over the weekend.

Not only will we keep you abreast of all the latest news and transfer rumours, but Mikel Arteta will face the press too. We'll be watching out for a coy glint in the eye as he's taken to task over Arsenal's last-minute plans while previewing the Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea.

Exits could also be the order of the day. Ethan Nwaneri has already joined Marseille on loan and Oleksandr Zinchenko completed his transfer to Ajax.

Alvarez?

One that is unlikely to happen, even with Ademola Lookman joining Atletico Madrid, but Julian Alvarez is said to be unhappy in the Spanish capital.

ESPN reports the La Liga giants would reportedly demand a fee in excess of €100m.

“I saw they were linked with Julian Alvarez who I know is not entirely happy with life at Atletico,” Gary Lineker said on the Rest is Football podcast. “Now that is the sort of player you know can handle the big occasion – he’s a World Cup winner for crying out loud.

“Someone like that at Arsenal would be game over. But they do need one or two of these current forwards to start scoring on a reasonably regular basis.”

Mikel Merino injury

The Spaniard is to undergo surgery, and his injury could be a seminal moment in the window for the Gunners.

"Time to stop now with a foot injury," Merino said. "Sometimes life throws this kind of challenges when is less convenient. Just another opportunity to be strong, resilient and overcome it. We have the best medical team and together we will come back stronger.

"Thank you all, your support means everything to me and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch soon, helping my team and doing what I love."
